Popular TV Shows of the 70s

Although TV was first introduced in Sarawak only in 1973 or 1974, many of us got hooked to various programs on the goggle box very quickly. After school and in the evenings, we spent many hours in front of the box, enjoying drama and action serials, game shows, movies, local productions from RTM and because it was such a novelty then, some of us often enjoyed even the ads ... and were able to hum the jingles way later (remember the Milo ad?) ...

TV watching in those days tended to be a much more social activity than it is today. Not every family had a TV set, but usually welcomed neighbours, friends and others to their homes for snacks before catching the latest installment of some series or movie or boxing match (like the Ali-Bugner event described before).

I remember Western shows such as "Laredo" and "Rawhide", cop shows like "The Rookie" and "CHiPs", and heartwarming family series like "The Waltons" and "Little House on the Prairie" ...

There were also local productions from RTM - variety shows, game shows, documentaries and comedy series.

Do share your own favourite shows and memories ...

  6. Clint Eastwood got his first big break in the long-running series "Rawhide" in 1959.

  7. I remembered watching Peyton Place starring Ryan O'Neil and Mia Farrow. Yep, Petrocelli, where he never completed his house in the country, building brick by brick.

  8. Rawhide was one of the earliest roles for Clint Eastwood. I always think of our late and dear friend, Liew Kuek Man whenever I hear the theme tune or the title mentioned. Some of us Hakka speakers would call him "Lo Liew" which further leads us to "Lo Hide" thus Rawhide. May he rest in peace.

  9. As a fourth and fifth former, I always remembered Kueh Man as a guy who was 'well-connected'. But despite his connections,he was never arrogant nor was he ever a bully. He was just an all-round nice guy. I liked and admired him when we were in secondary school. I was dreadfully sorry to hear of his untimely demise. May he rest in peace.

  11. I remember watching wrestling shows on TV with my grandmother and a few of my young cousins. I'm not a particularly avid fan of wrestling, and I was taken aback at how my grandma and my little cousins would shriek loudly at clever and violent moves by the wrestlers. Both 70 and 7 year olds seemed to be familiar with their pile drivers, body slams and irish whips ...

  14. I liked Sgt Schulz from Hogan's Heroes ... I see nothing...

  15. I HATED "Little House on the Prairie" even then. I thought it portrayed an unrealistic, over-idealistic family. And that opening scene of the Ingalls girl running thru the fields still gives me nightmares and nauseau.

  21. Who can you forget the TV show that starts with the words "Gentlemen, we can rebuld him ... we have the technology ... we have the capability to build the world's first bionic man ... Steve Austin will be that man" ? Then followed by that slow motion run sequence.

  22. TV shows like Petrocelli and Run for Your Life (with Ben Gazarra) must have inspired our friend GL to join the ranks of the lawyer community. Right, Georgie boy? he he he

  23. Petrocelli, yes. And also Perry Mason. I always imagined myself unmasking the real killer while cross-examining a witness in court, ala Petrocelli. That doesn't happen in real life, though. And I never got into criminal law. Ended up as a boring corporate lawyer. LOL.
