I feel that comics pages break the monotony of the serious - and often depressiing - news of the day, and has the potential to help a reader start the day with a little spring ... a little smile ... a little happier. I've also never understood why it is only the weekend papers that have many more pages of comics. Don't we need cheering up on weekdays too? (perhaps our former classmate Datuk Anthony, CEO of NSTP, would care to comment if he happens to be reading this :-)
I always recall this cartoon and classic phrase from my favourite Peanuts strip from years ago: Happiness is a Warm Puppy.
You can substitute any other animal (kittens, bunnies, guinea pigs, ferrets, parrots?) for "puppy" if you're not that keen on dogs, but you get the idea. I guess the point here is that in life happiness does not have to come from money or material things, but often from the very simple things in life which can be free or almost free.
So my chatting point and request today is for you to adapt and complete Charlie Brown's phrase in your own words, with your own experience and perspective. In other words, for you
Happiness is ... ?
i liked the old comic strips too. Do u rembr "Blondie" & "Bringing Up Father"?
ReplyDeletemodesty blaise is what is used to look for in the earlier days. i like how she and willie garvin are so committed and loyal. nothing, nothing stands in their way and their relationship platonic it may be.
ReplyDeleteI didn't really notice the relationship between Modesty and Willy. I thought us boys were just interested in looking at Modesty and her .... er, ahem.
ReplyDeleteBlondie and Bringing Up Father are still in the Borneo Post every day. Wonderful how comic characters never age - wish same could be said for us ... haha.
ReplyDeleteI always smiled at "Dennis the Menace" as it reminded me of someone I knew.
ReplyDeleteThe best things in life are free ...

Modesty Blaise and Willie, eh? With a name like Willie, it's hard to believe in a platonic relationship :-)

ReplyDeleteDo you guys find that your kids don't have the same interest in comics as some of us did in our time (or even now) ?
ReplyDeleteWilson - it that you quoting Gandhi??
ReplyDeleteHappiness is never to worry about money.
ReplyDeleteI see lots of happiness-money comments. Here are two quotes that may be of interest:
ReplyDelete"Money can't buy you happiness, but it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery" - Spike Milligan, comedy writer & actor
"What's the use of happiness? It can't buy you money" - Aldous Huxley, writer & philosopher
I LIKE MAD MAGAZINE. REMMBER THEM? I THINK STILL CAN GET, YES?

ReplyDeleteThere is no duty we so underrate as the duty of being happy. By being happy we sow anonymous benefits upon the world.
