Lessons from Primary One

One of my favourite books is Robert Fulghum's "Everything I Really Needed to Know, I Learnt in Kindergarten". Very slim book, very easy read, very wise life lessons. I've had a copy on my office desk for many years, which I still dip into once in a while when things get unecessarily complex. Anyway, check it out if you've never read the book.

So I'd like to start what might be an interesting discussion in the same vein. Think back to Primary One, if you can remember those early years. For some of us, that would be St Joe Primary One. For others, it might be at another school. Doesn't really matter where.

What did you learn in that formative year that has served you well in your later life?

  1. The 10 000th hit came at about 9.10am. Who was the lucky one?

  2. Determining the "lucky" 10,000 visitor is a little bit hazy ... but its between GL and KCK, who will now buy dinner & wine for each other, making sure to leave some nice reds for Website Jaga. Ha ha ha !

  3. Just to add my thanks for everyone in their enthusiastic participation. Hope you will continue to partake in the fracas, and be sure to suggest new topics to discuss, as Website Jaga is pulling out his hair thinking of new ones!

  4. As I was already online monitoring the hit counter since about 8am [LOL - got nothing better to do!], I have to give the credit to KCK. Everybody, a big round of applause for KCK for getting hit number 10 000 in this wonderful website. The website jaga will no doubt make a special mention of this later with a photo of KCK.

Jimmy boy, bet you never thought you'd reach 10,000 hits by April when you first set up this blog in January. A wonderful job, mate.

The rest of you, keep checking in and spreading the word. We are now looking forward to our next milestone: hit number 100,000. LOL.

  5. I LEARN THAT IN DIFFICULT INTERACTION WITH PEOPLE, ESP THOSE BIGGER THAN U, YOU EITHER DEPEND ON YOUR MOUTH OR YOUR FEET

  6. When playing "mata liak chat" (police & thief), hiding near to where the police are is often a better strategy as they always look farther first. In life, it means keeping close to your adversaries.

  7. Seven bowls of laksa is too much. At any age. No matter how delicious.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Who's eating 7 bowls of laksa? Lucky devil. I'd be lucky to get one bowl a month without my wife frowning at me. Hahaha.

  9. I wasn't deliberately aiming for the 10k hit. But I take any price that comes along with it.

    Congras Jaga on this milestone!

Is the Jaga planning to put any commercials up in this blog? Perhaps get the laksa vendors to showcase for one fan among us.

Ah...just had a bowl for lunch at my favorite shop runs by 2 sisters in Damansara Heights. Shop's name is Sin Heng. What they do is that a thick layer of yellow colored santan is added on top of the curry noodle to give the maximum kick. Bad for the heart though.

  10. Commercials? Interesting idea CK. Any marketing guru in our group? Given the normal target audience of this blog (key characteristics: 50 y.o., male, mostly Sarawakian & Malaysian, quite computer literate, speak English, some Malay, Hokkien and a smattering of other dialects, mostly married, likely overweight, eyesight not so good, etc), what might be some companies, products or services that we might attract to pay to have their ads plastered all over?

  11. Ads to sell medicine for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and supplements to help reduce weight [preferably without need to exercise], vitamins to improve eyesight, viagra, hair regrowth therapy, membership to some modern gyms where you can sit and watch some sweet nubile young thing running on the threadmill ...

all proceeds to go to charity of course.

  12. Hey, guys
Admit it we are still boys at heart and definately not "old men" even in looks or age, unless you term 50 year olds as "old". Having said that, my principle is simple: One's age is only a number and you are as old as how you feel. The trouble with most of us SJS old boys that we started in an all boys school and we were involuntary and systematically "brain washed". We just cannot handle any female connotations or participation. It takes time and life time experience to overcome such disabilities. Not saying that I am experienced in that field but hey does it matter. This disabilities make our "young" heart pitter and patter more often than most (which is good and I am sure our heart surgeon JK would agree). So Website jaga, just some ideas and topics for you: see if any of our brave members would start telling us their past conquest(s) with the opposite sex (oops should not mentioned "SEX")girls, be it someone that you fancy or the one that got away and still fancy. What would you do if you could turn the clock back. LOL. Now those of you "Anons" can post as much details as you want and nobody is to know who you are!!!.

    ReplyDelete
  13. If John's suggestion is taken up, the number of hits will go through the roof! But no one will dare cos it will be too easy to identify the anons. Who dated who or who interested in who, or who chased who - all not hard to guess, lah. Even with the passage of time.

But why don't you start the ball rolling, John? C'mon, be the first one with the 'hoots' to kiss and tell. "Secret loves of a fifth former". Sounds like a Jackie Collins novel - hahaha.

  14. Hello boys!!!
I had been following the blog ever since i know of its existence last Friday.

After a few days of reading it suddenly dawned on me that PC is the Phillip Chin who used to cook for for us girls back in London. We girls only washed up and the boys used to cook for us!! Nice huh?

So as a repayment of those services rendered please dont bully him anymore!! Haha!!

We girls had also been re-connecting and we had our fair share of re-unions!!

    Take Care

  15. Hi...George
Sorry, I am not that brave to mention it but I must admit that there were a few that I "fancy" and was too inexperience to approach anyone of them. During those years, these were girls from St Teresa, St Bernadettes and St Mary's too. May be those girls probably knew about it but thought it had to be the boys to start the courting first. Hey, I am already revealing too much here. How about this, instead of us revealing about ourselves, we mention about others. I need your counsel on this - will I or anyone get sue for defamation if we start on others? For example, If I mentioned someone's name and said that he fancy so and so, etc. hahahahaha.

Btw, Lee Kien, welcome aboard. Sorry that I cannot remember you (thousand apologies), can you tell us more of yourself. What year were you, which school, class, etc. How about post some photos to website jaga, JY to put on the blogs for us, boys? Regards

  16. Ha ha. Lucky you PC. See, I told you it was worth your while cooking for the girls. After all these years and going botak, the girls still remember, love and care for you!!! It was a bit like the email you send on 'the glass of milk'.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Philip, since a lady has interceded on your behalf, I will take the lead and promise not to 'kacau' you anymore. LOL. You must be a good cook for Lee Kien to remember you with such affection.

Btw, Lee Kien, are you the other half of any of the boys from '76? Who were the other boys who used to cook for the girls? And who were the girls? You must have told them about this hot blog by now.

John, don't name names if you want to say who chase who, lah. May not be defamatory but may make people 'malu'. But you can surely say which of the girls you thought were beautiful. I'm sure the girls won't mind. I am afraid I didn't know any girl from St Mary [although I am married to one now!] or from St Bernardette. But I will try to contribute if we are voting for Ms 1976. LOL.

  18. Lee Kien, thank you so much for interceding on behalf of a hapless soul. My time spent in the kitchens of London were not in vain! For those of you who are not too familiar with Lee Kien, she was in Form 5 Sc '76 at St. Teresa, a classmate of the spouses of the 2 James and Richard Lee. She says that she was the "quiet" one. Having just caught up with her this week(after 30yrs), I can say that she's no longer "quiet". So nice to have you on board and we hope more of your friends follow suit.

  19. Hmmm ... "Secret Loves of a Fifth Former" .. has a nice ring to it ... any other suggestions for this new posting? I just put it up. GL and JL need to sort out the rules and set the OB markers for the conversation ..

  20. what about "Crushes and Crashes" as a title ?

    ReplyDelete
  21. How did we veer so badly off topic? Have to admit that this is more interesting though.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Website Jaga gotta set up a new post for this 'interesting' topic. John's waiting to contribute. Hahahaha ...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Sigh. I might as well .. The discussion here is on everything except "Lessons from Primary One" ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  24. LOL. Maybe the lessons we learnt in primary one set the stage for all the shenanigans we got up to in form 4 and 5. So it's still related, Mr Jaga.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wonder how it relates to Website Jaga being the perennial cry-baby in Primary 1! The fact that Bro. Austin fed him rottan on a regular basis during that formative year attests to its efficacy! A bit of vitamin R never hurt anyone, except JY's behind. All good training for Ms Tai. ;D

  26. Chen Lee Kien was the girl standing right behind the teacher in their class photo.

    ReplyDelete
  27. And, if I'm not mistaken, that's our Form 6 classmate, Chan Hui Cheng, next to her (behind Mrs Jaga).

    ReplyDelete
  28. Then there's Susie Chung (back leftmost) but I can't seem to find Mr Chai's daughter, Yunn Siang in the photo. They were in Form 6 with us.

  29. KC,
She is in the right section, second last row, 2nd from the right in the class photo.

    Lee Kien,
Hello and hope you cotinue to encourage your old classmates to participate in this site.

    George,
One of the girls was Mary Kuek, I believe..Too long ago lah...Lee Kien will recall for sure...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mary Kuek,CLK? Do I know Mary? Does not sound familiar.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am not sure, but I think Lee Kien can confirm that.

  32. Mary Kuek is in last row, rightmost.
