Reunion 2009

The purpose of this post is to help us organise our next Reunion Celebration in 2009. It will be 33 years since we were all in Form 5 in 1976. Furthermore all of us will be hitting (or have hit) the Big 5 in terms of age. We might even use the tagline "Life Begins at Fifty" (only a suggestion, lah! Other inputs are of course welcome.)

We need to first agree on two key things - WHERE and WHEN.

WHERE
There have been a few locations suggested:

(A) Mr Sinos proposes the exotic location of Siem Reap, Cambodia. Imagine dining and dancing with the famous and historic Angkor Wat in the background. As Sinos is based there, he is familiar with the place and can help advise us on travel and accomodation. A few others have already expressed interest in this option.

(B) Kuala Lumpur is another suggestion, as a number of old boys are based there, and KL does have a lot of shopping malls, eateries and drinking spots to amuse us.

(C) Of course, the default venue is our home town Kuching, which is convenient for many who are still living there. For those flying in, we can take the opportunity to visit relatives, and perhaps also make a visit to our old alma mater.

We are still open for other venues, so do give your suggestions.

WHEN
Instead of pinning down the exact date now, which might be difficult, I suggest we first decide on the month. Since it is already March, I don't think it's practical to expect that the reunion can happen until the second half of the year, perhaps no earlier than August. What do you guys think?

So I suggest to you after reading this to give us at least two things in your comments - which venue you prefer (either A, B, C or somewhere else that you suggest), and which month would be better for you? And for this feedback, try not to be anonymous, ok?

Any other feedback or ideas relating to this reunion are most welcome. Over to you ...

  9. Two questions for Mr Sinos:
    (1) what's the weather like in August?
    (2) what's a good hotel for us to stay? and about how much per nite?

  10. I copied this from a travel website for Siem Reap, Cambodia:

Temperatures always are high in Cambodia. Nevertheless, we can distinct three periods of four months :

The best time to go is from Nov to Feb : Temperatures are pleasant and rains are few and far between

The less pleasant time to go is from Mar to Jun : Temperatures rise and short downpours happen about three times a week. Nevertheless, these conditions have some advantages, tourists are less numerous around temples and hotel prices are more affordable

From Jul to Oct, it is a pleasant time to go : Average temperatures and more frequent downpours are waiting for you. But, sudden showers generally do not last more than one hour in a day and are welcomed when temperatures are high. And brightness is pretty and perfect to take a photo when stones in temples are wet. In fact, the only inconvenience of visiting temples in these conditions is muddy pathways around Temples.

  11. Let's do it in Kuching, where all our roots are. Those who want to go Siem Reap can do it as a Form5-76 group holiday. In Kuching we can kill many birds with 1 stone, including a group photo in front of the school, in our old class etc

  12. Anonymous March 5, 2009 6:53 PM,
    very true, correct correct crrect.
    you have my support.
then have a Form5-76 group holiday to Siem Reap for extra-curricular and nocturnal activities.

  13. I'm told that as there's relatively less pollution there, the night sky in Siem Reap is full of brilliant stars . So really ... sipping your beer and gazing at the night sky is a great extra-curricular nocturnal activity.

  14. I STILL WANNA GO SIEM REAP !!!

  15. What about a two-stop event?

    ReplyDelete
  16. But everybody do their class reunions in Kuching. We shd be different from everybody else.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Certainly a class reunion in Siem Reap would make the class of '76 unique and very special. Question is: how many will make the trip? Why not let us know who is in favour? Let us know your name pls. Too many mr anonymous - maybe all the same guy ... LOL.

Instead of anonymous, pick 'name/url' and type in yr name. leave url blank. it is not necessary to fill. i thought had to fill and it gave me all kinds of problems wondering what the heck my url is. took me a while to figure out that url not needed. :-)

  18. George is right. While we can't prevent anyone from signing in as Anonymouse, we would really like you to put in your name where possible. Don't be shy lah!

Maybe I should start a "roll call" post and see who says "present" :-)

  19. I just met Pok Vun at the Sarawak Club and had a chat with him. He has said that he would be happy to organise a few impromptu 'reunions' whenever anyone from our cohort comes back. Just let him know [his email is lkcbob@tm.net.my] when you are back in Kuching [for CNY or whatever] and he will round up a few of the Kuching resident fifth formers together for a drink or dinner. He's volunteered to be the point man for this job.

  21. What about cool Britannia, now that Air Asia started flying to London??

  22. Wah, ambitious, Eric! Nice idea but probly have to wait for next stock mrket boom instead of recessn

  23. Hi Kung Miang - how about sending in a photo of yourself (and family?) in Nottingham. Maybe with Sherwood Forest in the background :-)

Many people are no doubt interested in how their classmates look like 33 years hence, though I'm sure the chilly weather in UK will have kept your features young and well-preserved, unlike some of us in the tropics :-(

  24. HOW ABOUT ASKING THE ST TERESA ANGELS TO JOIN US?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Dear all,

Been absent for almost 11 days & sorry for not replying to some questions posed such as hotels & cuaca..Cuaca already replied..Hotel- many to choose from..from USD2-00 backpacker dorm to USD2K room a night for Mick Jagger & Angelina Jolie..but there are good clean hotels ranging from USD30-00 to USD60-00 per room/night..3-stars hotel.

Also recieved feedback from some ex 5 Formers 1976...they still prefer to have it in Kuching..as for Siem Reap, it can be an individual trip or if there is some Warren Buffet among us, he should sponsor us the trip to Siem Reap...haahhaa!!!

    Thanks & keep on writing...
    Sinos

  30. As some of you have noted, it does look like we are gravitating towards two types of events

    (A) Reunion in Kuching
    (B) Class visit to Seam Reap, Cambodia

We'd encourage as many as possible to make it for (A), but(B) is optional, and those who want to enjoy the sights of the famous Angkor Wat & other Cambodian attractions can sign up.

We can have the events done one after the other, or seperate them.

I suggest we try to fix the timings of both events. Votes please.

    ReplyDelete
  31. For me, agree to have a reunion in KCH and Siem Reap trip, a seperate date & program...which I can handle for you all.

Just get the ball rolling guys...

    Thanks,
    Sinos

  32. Hi guys , I concured with James and Sinos 's proposals -both in Kuch and those who want a bit more of adventure -at Siem Reap . We are all in the 50's now and lets us get moving before we have less around. One justleft us recently! Agreed with JY and GL that that as classmates we all should not shield behind "anonymous" .
Sinos , suggest you propose a date for us to arrange our schedule given that we all need to plan ahead -seeking leave approval , wives'approval !!etc .cheers

    ReplyDelete
  33. Lucky JY is having a tiny reunion with a few of the guys in KL in a week's time. Expect to see some photos and stories after 3 April.

Agree with Nick that early warning needed in order to allow the Ministers for Home Affairs to process visa applications to go 'reunion' in Siem Reap.

Beside, 5 different guys may have 5 different availability dates! LOL. Some logistical planning needed here, I reckon.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sinos said:

Guys, agree with Nick's views. For those wishing to visit SR and also mini reunion here, I can arrange that. But please confirm the attendees. Date: Sept or Oct will be OK..Still off-peak season for tourist.

Details to follow or you guys can e-mail me individually. Your comments/suggestions are most welcomed.

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hey Guys ! lets us start the ball rolling . I am in for SR . Suggest we set end of June 2009 as the deadline for confirmation . Is it too late , Sinos ?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sinos replied...

Nick, end of June is fine with me to arrange..so plse guys, let us know who would like to come to Siem Reap so that we can start preparing the ground work..Like Nick siad we are in our 50s now..so let go & see the world while we still can and where the cost is affordable too.

There are so many of you towkays in your own ways back home...so come on..let's roll, guys.

Be hearing from you guys soon..
    Rgds

  37. Hello guys ! Pls indicate your stand by end of June . Curtis Teo has tentatively confirmed. I am in . How aboout JY and GL ? I will try to convince Pok Vun .

Lets us touch base and cherish when ever we are still kicking!Imagine for some meeting for the first time in 30years! Pls do not miss this opportunity .

  38. Question: are you guys going solo or bringing the family? How many days are we planning the trip for? Let's get serious now. JY surely coming along as this is his brainchild. Right, Jimmy?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm definitely IN provided we have it after mid-September.Oct and Nov is also ok.

Whether solo or with family I'll let you guys decide. Some might want with family, some might not. Also timing might not be ideal for everyone's family (esp school hols, spouse working etc)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sinos, further to George's note, what is a good length of time for this class visit to Siem Reap? 3-4 days?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I believe Dr Chong Chi Nai is also keen if we can schedule early. Manila to Siem Reap not very far

    ReplyDelete
  42. Suggest solo so that the "batam" can have more time to catch up given the fact that most have not met up since 1976. If "home ministry participation " is necessary for "passport " then we would have to be accomodative. As JY suggested let us fix it from September onwards then . Is it ok Sinos?

    ReplyDelete
  43. For Siem Reap trip, so far we have the following who already expressed interest to go:

    1. Nicholas Lau
    2. James Yong
    3. George Lo
    4. Dr Chong Chi Nai
    5. Sinos Bartholomew (of course)

C'mon guys .. like Nick said, we're already 50 so if we don't travel now then when?

Express your interest by commenting on this post ! Sinos needs to know to start making arrangements.

It will be between mid-Sep and Nov. Maybe we try to fix in Oct, Sinos?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I forgot one more

    6. Curtis Teo (tentatively confirmed)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hi Sinos, any updates on the Siem Reap Class Trip ? Can you help propose a "package" to the guys? Eg: how many nights, how much (approx)/pax, rough itinerary . So that we can get more confirmations? Also the deadline for confirmation remains end June, right?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Tuan Jaga Website,

Ma'af lah... a bit busy these few days but still manage to peek once in a while. Looks like only 5 of us for this micro reunion or class visit...sort of.

I would still like to have some ideas on your budget you might have in mind. From USD2-00

dormitory orUSD2K Mick Jaggers's private villa ( just joking lah..) But for hotel, we can work out of something like USD40-50 a night brkfst included, Angkor Wat pass ( USD20-00) a day, makan minum, say USD20-30 a day etc...

OK, to make it easier, I will propose few packages for your consideration, OK? It should be out next week as this week we will have MITI minister visiting us ( some YB Dato'Mustapha Mohd..something like that)Me busy again lah for nothing..maybe ask for APs ( heehhe!!)

Yes, deadline end of June but can also extend abit mah..so that more could join us.

    Bon weekend to all.
    Sinos
