We were then in Form 4, the so-called "honeymoon" year (cos we didn't have to take any key public exams) and had more time on our hands. Do you remember the boxing craze that it sparked off among us guys? Every red-blooded kid suddenly had access to boxing gloves, and bouts were regularly being held at people's garages or gardens. If any of you now suffer from dizzy spells or memory lapses, it probably stemmed from the thumping you got during those days ;-)
If I'm not mistaken, it was also the early days of television (black & white TV just introduced, lah!) in Sarawak, and in the run-up to July, the sale of TV sets went up quite significantly, as everyone wanted to catch the live telecast of the Ali-Bugner bout.
Anyway, you can relive some of the scenes in the following YouTube video ...
Or if you remember the song that went with the occasion & personality, you'll enjoy this other music video ...
Ahhh ... those were the days. Do share your own unique experiences. Did you watch the Ali-Bugner match? Did you go in for your own boxing tournaments? Who did you fight? Where did you fight? Who won? What did you win?

ReplyDeleteJohn: I seemed to recall that it was a big topic of the day at school and I remembered I went to our school mate's house at Rubber Road west (Mohammed Said, I think that was his name, he was one year our junior and he his brother was one year, our senior)to watch the fight. They had a big black and white tv, there were quite a gathering at their house.
ReplyDeleteJohn: Hey guys, remember this one (since we touch on boxing). Year 1976, final year, there was a big fight amongst our friends between Ong Poi Jin and Christopher Chew. We all sort of encouraged them to settle their years of dislike of each other. We all gathered in one of the classes one afternoon and they had a right old ding dong. I recalled Chris came off worst with few bruises and black eye. I think they were suspended as well when Bro Columba got news of it. Anyone of you remember this event?
ReplyDeleteJohn, i kinda remember the OPJ-CC fight but think you may have the dates confused. I'm quite sure CC was never in Form 5 with us, having left for UK during or shortly after Form 3, so the fight must have taken place in 1974 or 75 ?
ReplyDeleteJames, you might be right.
ReplyDeletei remember that we were allowed to turn on the radio and listen to the live broadcast in school when the fight/match was on.
ReplyDeleteOK, let's have it all out now ... it's been 30 over yrs since those boxing tournaments we had .. who whipped whose ass then????
