"What & Where in Kuching is This?" Challenge

In the previous Random Photo Album posting, there seemed to be some interest in the exercise of identifying familiar places in Kuching, from photos taken from unusual angles. Well friends, if you thought that was easy, you're probably right ... because it was simply a teaser to THIS challenge.
xxx
NOW, let's see how well you really know our old hometown. There are 10 spots, and the winner is the one who gets all 10 right first. Remember you need to say WHAT it is, and also WHERE it is. There will be a prize, but I'm not telling you what it is yet. (Emmmm, just a note to CLK(f) : it's not an MB box!!!). Anyway submit your final answer by email to your friendly Website Jaga at jslyong@hotmail.com.
xxx
Nothing to stop you making suggestions or having discussions with others via the "Comments" function (in fact I hope you do, to make it interesting) ... but you also run the risk of someone "leveraging" on your right identifications. Then again, you can also drop "red herrings" to send people off on the wrong paths .. like some of my clues ... hehehe.

  14. So far, no one seems to know all 10 of these spots. Not even "Kuching residents". Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  15. No. 2 could be any of several places with belian shingle roof!

Is that F&N sign at Boulevard? I have only been there once despite living in Kuching.

    ReplyDelete
  16. See, I told u even the locals don't know :-)

    Try harder, Georgie boy.

Lee Kien is even going back to Kuching to scan the town for all these locations !!!

  22. (9) is the secret Playboy Club in Kuching. Yea!

    ReplyDelete
  23. On (7), we all agree what a waste of money this project is, and we surely wanna tell the politicians where to put that pointed thing.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Re (5) - it reminds me of drinks like Green Spot and Red Lion that I enjoyed as a kid. Are those brands still available somewhere?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Green Spot is now Sundrop. Same company but there was a change of management and change of name (fo the company and the drink. So you won't find Green Spot anymore.

LK(f), Sundrop is not produced by F&N.

    ReplyDelete
  26. GL, surprised me that you have not got no.2. You definitely been there. And quite frequently in the past I would say. Not sure if you still do nowadays.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well, I thought of the old Court house opposite the post office or the Sarawak Club. Both have belian shingle roof. Cannot see enough details to say for sure which one. So have to say "I don't know". What clue do you see in the photo to tell you which building it is, Leo?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Cannot tell, Leo! Georgie boy doesn't have prayer to guess this one. God knows, he's trying hard ... ha ha ha

    ReplyDelete
  29. Georgie boy, WJ is asking you to pray hard for this one. Do it and it might come to you.

  36. Hi Anonymous..June 19,2009 10.12

I thought boys should be more forward, why remain Anon, pretending to be shy?

This is the 21st Century. I am not from across the bridge, just a secret admirer

    ReplyDelete
  37. Woo hoo!! We have secret admirer now.

And the hit counter is nearly 26,000! Next milestone is not far away. Go spread the word, people. This is THE blog!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. You're right Agnes. Those anon users are just rude. This is Anthony here welcoming you warmly to this wonderful blog. Do keep commenting and also let all your girlfriends know about this community.

  39. We know that when most Kuchingites come back home, one of their priorities is to look for their favourite local food - laksa, kolo mee, tomato kueh-tiaw, belacan beehoon, angtow peng, rojak, kueh chap, etc etc.

How about taking photos of your favourite hawker and his best dish and sending to WJ. When he has compiled enough, he can have a new post which will have lots of guys and gals drooling all over the world!

Kuching is growing by the day so the food post will be a source of reference for all those who have been away for a while when they come home to visit.

  40. Yesterday one of my friends told me to try the sugar cane juice mixed with coconut juice and coconut flesh at Song Thian Cheok hawker Centre..

The weather is so humid so i decided to go and try..well the mixture is refreshing..both sugar cane and coconut juice has the cooling effect.

I was sitting there for a while and the majority of the patrons ordered this..

I must say i feel extremely bloated after taking
    1) tomato mee
    2) ang tau peng
    3) cooling juice (described above)
    4) rojak

The ang tau peng is not as good as the one in open air.

Overall i should say hawker food is still relatively cheaper here in Kuching than KL..so guys enjoy!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Good idea Georgie boy. Maybe a food post (or series of posts) soon, once u guys & gals send me your foodie photos and details.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Makan Sutra would be interesting. Alot of places we frequent 30 years ago would have moved on. Can we do a reunion with authentic hawker fare, in whichever city we are in. Of course Kuching will be perfect. Hotel & mall food is sooo boring. We still crave open air type.

    ReplyDelete
  43. How about booking one of the St Joe classrooms, pushing the desks together to form a big table, drape over with a tablecloth, and coordinate such that each person buy a certain type of hawker food (x N packets), and bring that evening for all. Will be cheap, good & plenty delicious.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Currently, who is the principal of St Joe ?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Last I heard, it was someone called Dominic Pan ... not sure if my info is current or not.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ms Ho> Well, when I last asked about two years ago, it was Mr Pan. That's why "was". It might still be him .. I'm just not certain.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ms Ho???
Am I thinking of the same Ms Ho?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Don't get excited. Mind the blood pressure. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  49. It is not Dominic Pan cos he has just been appointed principal of Lodge International School this year.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Now then, as I see it, there are new visitors/contributors to these blogs: Agnes, Ms Ho and even Anthony (sorry Anthony, as there are different Anthonys or you may not be called Anthony during the school days, so which one are you). Please declare who you are and we would have a better idea and may even asked appropriate question to you. Talking about hawker food, where else can beat that but of course I am biased here. LOL. Good idea on pictures of these delicious food but do bear in mind on moderation when sampling these food. Considering our age where we are prone to health problems and slower to recover. Food glorious food.....Can I have some more, please? MORE!!!?? You want MORE!!!!??? as in Oliver!!!..LOL

    ReplyDelete
  51. John,

Better to come back and sample those glorious food yourself than looking at the pictures..

    ReplyDelete
  52. Someone enjoyed the Kuching delicacies so much she accidentally deliberately extended her stay by 24 hours. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  53. My choice would be kolo mee, tomato fried mee, or kueh tiaw, sweet mee, laksa, satay (check it out with Ch'ng Seng Chai if his brother/sister is still doing it), mee goreng, masi lemak, iced kacang, ang tow chieng loot, siew bee, chicken rice, pork leg from Carpenter St, Bak kut teh, beef noodles, cha siew pork, poh piah, aiyah so many others to name. Hahahahahaha. Bet some of you are having one of these food now or about to order some or on your out to get some. Cannot blame you as it is one of the main hobbies of Malaysians. Selamat makan.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Back to the contest, NO ONE HAS GOT ALL 10 CORRECT YET ... hehehe

    ReplyDelete
  57. Five more days to deadline, and STILL NO ONE HAS GUESSED ALL THE LOCATIONS CORRECTLY ... :-)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Three more days to deadline ... not so easy huh? Hehehe !

    ReplyDelete
  59. 1 more to figure out and just 3 days to do so. seems like a tall order.
    Leo.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hah ... Are you sure you got the other nine correct already?

    ReplyDelete
  61. 9 correct yes. sure. very sure.
maybe a wild guess on the last.

    ReplyDelete
  62. ONE MORE DAY ... and since everyone seems stumped, the contest is now open to all - residents and non-residents of Kuching :-)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Maybe we all should gang up and share answers eh WJ ok or not?

Or WJ may copy Tote-roll over prize to next contest with bigger price!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anyone else noticed that we have a new record for the most comments for this post. Even surpassing the previous record of 63 chalked up by 'Update on Virtual Party'.

    ReplyDelete
  66. LAST FEW HOURS .... any wild guesses?

Lee Kien> It doesn't matter if you submit individually or gang up lah! I don't think anyone's gonna crack it! Muahahaha ...

    ReplyDelete
  67. ok, time up. anybody got the prize?

    ReplyDelete
  68. So ..WJ, who was closest? And wat are the right answers?

    ReplyDelete
  69. ANSWER TIME

    1) Cat statue @ Padungan

    2) St Joseph's Cathedral ... where many loitered around 1pm when school was over, watching the girls watch the boys watch the girls ....

    3) William Tan Auditorium, St Joe (where the telescope for peeking across the road, is located)

    4) Ann Lee Restaurant (still pretty nice Pork or Chicken Chop)

    5) Elektra House (at the side where a fountain used to be, long time ago)

    6) Khoo Hun Yeang Street (not far from JL's Corner Shop)

    7) the DUN (Dewan Undangan Negeri) .. yeah, what's the point?

    8) Central Police Station ("eyes" = "mata" ... get it?)

    9) Sugar Bun ... nothing to do with Playboy bunnies.

    10) and the one which stumped everybody except Nick C (who alas didn't submit an entry) .... the inside of the State Library, across river.

Tsk tsk tsk ... guys & gals, you really should get out more often !!! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  70. Cheaahh...so easy, why did make it so difficult WJ? Make me go back to find answers some more..
So bad lah you WJ, ooh i know want me to take more pictures of Gambier Char Pasar...so so smart la!! Some more make me pile on the extra kilos due to the after effects of kolo mee!!

  71. Replying to anon 21 jun,9.07pm, WJ & GL.

Present principal (of 4 months) is Thomas Lau.
While not a Josephian, nevertheless he is a product of a La Salle school having been schooled at Sacred Heart Sibu in the 70s as well and that under Bro. Albinus.
Had a chat with him recently and I can detect his passion and enthusiasm and desire to live up to the standards that was before under the bros.
And for those who know Bro. Albinus, he is right there at SJS Kuching and still at it providing tutorials to students who seek it.
For those with the feeling that standards at good old sjs has fallen, I really believe THomas Lau will reverse the trend.
