This one came from GL who spotted a St Joe school bus plying the streets of Kuching these days. Hmm, obvious progress in the transportation area at least! I wonder what's next - a St Joe boat? a St Joe plane?
xxxx
The next two shots were taken when I briefly visited the school on my last trip. The first one is in our old Form 5Sc classroom, and the other is at the upstairs corridor.
xxxx
Here are a few more shots, contributed by Leo a while ago ... first the walkway between the old classroom block and the science block. I think this was around even in our time, but obviously a bit spruced up.

And this one is of a new Stadium building, named after the well-loved late teacher Datuk Polycarp Sim ...
and finally a shot of a very important building .. the toilet block .. hahaha!
Happy reminiscing ...

I remember Datuk Polycarp Sim well, even tho he never taught us.
ReplyDeleteWhen we were in Form 3/4, after working at the library in the evenings, we would normally go for some supper (at St Mike or Satok) & then walk back to the school, where we'd sit around and chat for a while on the "ledge" at the chin-up bars area. On some of these occasions, we would see Mr Sim (later Datuk Sim) walk down from the school towards his house, which was at the edge of the SJS Primary School fields near Satok. Usually he would say hello, and sometimes he would stop and chat with us - asking about studies, family, and recounting old stories.
The man had absolutely no airs. It was easy to see why he was considered such a great teacher.
To all the guys out there who are fathers..HAPPY FATHER'S DAY.
ReplyDeleteGreen walls in the classroom? Someone has a weird sense of taste. Peter, we need you to do some extreme design makeover for the St Joe classrooms?
ReplyDeleteGreen plastic chair too, to go with the green walls. Maybe green is good for the eyesight but it's an eyesore, as well as uncomfortable. Where are all the wooden furniture...
ReplyDeleteForever Young, we need someone with a better aesthetic taste. Our pervious colours of grey & white is definately much better. At least there's a ceiling fan nowadays. So much for progress
It's good to see tt we now have the Stadium Building but the architectural aesthetic is a bit salah.
ReplyDeleteIs it usual to do a new buiding in Kuching, without considering the existing main buildings in the compound.
I remember the science block was opened with much funfair by the then Chief Minister, Datuk Yacob, an old Josephian. The Science block looked dignified and is still valid today but can't say the same for the Stadium Building.
WJ, still prefer our old walkway; simple & airy. Great for the recess rush to the canteen. And then we can park our bicycles there at night, with BC as the jaga.
ReplyDeleteForever Young, can you find out the culprit who did all the changes! We had so much clout then compared to the other schools, but what happened in the name of progress?
Fond memories of Datuk Polycarp Sim. Indeed a true blue son of St. Joseph. Anyone close, in his footstep ...
ReplyDeleteMr Poh Chin Han-i went to his Maths tuition at Ellis Road..Did he ever teach you all..?
ReplyDeleteHe was incredible..could tell time without a watch, correct to the miniute. He only wore white, white shirt and white pants..no other coulour. One of the teachers who inspired me..
WJ,
ReplyDeleteWhat were your feelings as you walked those familiar corridors and classrooms?..
Did you have feelings of happiness? a sense of pride perhaps? Wow i have gone a long way...I am now a Consultant, author etc...
Or did you go back 33 years in time like Micheal J Fox did in his time machine, wishing all your buddies were with you?
Lee Kien> Sense of awe and gratitude to this place which had given all of us boys such a great foundation for life.
ReplyDeleteDatuk Polycarp Sim was a member of the state PSC which was resposible for appointments and postings at the state civil service. He used his influnce to assist many ex-josephians secure employment.
ReplyDeleteAlso recall a group of us chinese who decided to fool around playing sepak takraw. we had buy buy our own rattan balls (as the school did not let us have it unlike other sports).
Very often we continue with well worn balls. One Datuk walked by and saw it, next day he gave us a new one. Have always remembered him for this.
