Bangsar Bonanza

On a short trip to KL this week, Pip and I met two former classmates at a dinner arranged by Lee Kien at Delicious @ Bangsar Village on Monday evening ...

Take a look at this first photo & see if you can name the two individuals on the right ...xxx

It's Leong Kueh Fook (2nd from right) and Valentine Khoo (rightmost) !!! Haven't met the former for 33 years, and the latter for almost 40 years (as he left St Joe in early 1972) !! Fook is a businessman based in KL, while Valentine is in the renewable energy business, after a long career in banking.

The four old friends checked out old photos on my notebook, and recalled old friends and old times.

This occasion was made possible only through Lee Kien, who hosted the event (thanks LK!!!). Seen in the photo above, Lee Kien with hubby & cute daughter, and the four old Josephians.

Even after the dinner, a few adjourned to Coffee Bean for caffeine and cyber-surfing onto the blog ...

  4. It was indeed an honour and privilege. Such joy to be able to witness the happy faces when they first meet!!

VK was a bonus and a surprise as i only tried my luck ie called him in the morning. It was only around 6pm that he called to confirm that he's coming.

It was also 30 years ago i last saw Pip..

All these moments will be forever treasured..happy moments money can never buy....

The best part of it was everyone was shaking hands, hugs, smiling..

Then when they all sat down, Fook and Pip looked at VK and asked "Chee koh see ha mung lai"..

We all broke into loud laughter and yes you guess right you know who laughed the loudest!!

  5. It was indeed great to be finally in touch (literally) again with some old friends! And thanks to LK's persistence (err .. guess that's why she's so successful at what she's doing now ...) for making it happened! Also thanks to her generosity for hosting dinner!

  8. Hi...all
Can somebody do a head count on how many of the SJS "old" boys residing or working in KL (or West Malaysia) and not to forget our sisters from STS. It's great to find and locate them. Again many thanks to JAMES YONG (thought I write out your name instead of initials for your ingenious ideas and foresight). My "hats" to you James, respect. Of course to others who contributed and spread the good words about these blogs and not to forget to mention Lee Kian as well for her link to our sisters and her fantastic connections to locate others. It's nice to see KF again and I can recognise him immediately. I still remember him on his BMX bike. Not so sure about VK but that was a long time ago. BTW, what is your profession, Lee Kian (apology if it has been mentioned before). Best wishes to all.

  11. The tentacles of WJ are reaching further and wider. And now there's an Honorary St.Joe76 lass in CLKien. But she has to go through the rites of initiation and that includes having her then photo published here and getting ribbed as well.

  15. Ooops, all right re: be wary.
    Haha.
And oops again, forgot your friend, give me some more time. Busy with house (actually room) cleaning and tidying... the Mrs coming for a spot check. Need to ensure that things that should not be there are there. Nothing incriminating.

  18. I remember VK in primary school as a very bright kid with short & spiky hair.

  19. Thanks John. The blog is growing also because of all your participation. Sometimes I feel it's taking a life all of its own, in that I really don't know what's gonna happen next

  20. The first two great candid photos really captured the emotions, and were taken by Lee Kien. I must admit that even tho' Point&Shoot cameras have improved tremendously, DSLRs are still so much sharper.

  21. Great to see JY,PC and VK (sorry - I really cannot recognize you). Thanks to CLKien for organising it.Hi to KC and JL too - it's a chopper not a BMX lah.

  22. JY and I were at the table when someone walked in behind me. Lee Kien stood up with her camera ready and said, "he's here"! We all greeted each other very warmly and all the time I was thinking to myself that Kueh Fook had changed a lot! A minute later, LK went,"lai loh lai loh", I turned around and it was Kueh Fook looking like he did 30 years ago! We chatted in teochew for a minute and then I slowly leaned over to him and whispered,"who is that guy?" Fook, clueless like me, said,"why dont you ask him!" So I uttered the immortal words,"lu si ha mang?"LK gave me a clue and said "Pri6" and I recognised Valentine immediately!!! We were only expecting KF and LK had completely surprised us with Valentine as well.

  23. H Kueh Fook, good to see your smiling face again after all these years. I don't recognise Valentine but I certainly remember him by name from primary school days. It's truly a wonder that so many people have got reunited since this blog started.

Valentine, do I remember correctly that your dad's name is Vincent and he was, at one time, one of the top ranked policeman in the state?

    Cheers,
    GL.

  24. Hi...KF
Of course, it is the Chopper, was it made famous from the film ET?. Like others who are sad people like me, logs on this web site almost daily, especially at work when I have a bit of "free" time (honest!!!). Even just reading the comments from all the contributors, would put a smile on my face and reminisce on old times. Like LK said, it is like extended family, I wonder if anyone of you had a fall out with one or more of your classmates through jealousy (you know girl/boy friends problem), etc and had never made up. I think now's the opportunity to do it. Or tell us your story that you had done that and had met up and become great friends, or would like the chance to do that and like to find out where this person is now. To be honest, I have one very good friend that went slightly sour before I went overseas and I would like to made it up if I see him again. I will tell you who it is on a later blog.

  25. Hi George,

You are indeed correct. My dad is Vincent Khoo and he was a "mata" and that also explains my short and spiky hair in school!

    Cheers, Val

  26. John,

Why wait till you see him again before you make it up with him? If you know the guy and know his contact/e-mail why not drop a line and just let him know what you want to say?

Life is too short...Today i learnt my husband's cousin had passed on due to cancer..he was gone after a few months he discovered he had cancer..Imagine his parents had never inform their own siblings that their son had cancer. When he passed on, his sister told my husband and my husband then inform his Uncles etc..

What i am trying to say is... you may not know whether he is going to be still around when you are ready to say sorry...so do it NOW!!

For all you know he may have forgotten about it but it is you who is the one who need to say sorry...so for whatever reason JUST DO IT! and it will make you happy....

  27. Hi..LK
Thank you for your wise advice. You are absolutely right that life is just too short to hold any grudges (which I have not really) against anyone especially amongst friends or family.

  28. KC> Yes, I vaguely remember the "Roman Cycle" nickname for Roney too ... haven't the foggiest where that originated.
