Class Trips for 2010

Now that the excitement of the Grand Reunion has kinda subsided (I do hope most of you have recovered from your "reunion withdrawal" symptoms), it may be a good time to start thinking of our class trip or trips for 2010. I suspect it will be trips (plural), as quite a number of ideas have been floating around.

To date, I've already heard suggestions for

(A)   Thailand (possibly Bangkok or Chiang Mai or Phuket)

(B)    Vietnam (Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City or both)

(C)    Southern China Tour
(I'm sure our old China hand, Ben Wong, will fill you in with his ideas. Soon I'll also be posting some pictures from his previous China trips)

(D)    Shanghai (around the Shanghai Expo 2010 time?)

(E)     Ireland (to visit Ta Ker and take up his offer to be tour guide)

(F)    Borneo Extravaganza (Kuching, Sibu, Miri, Brunei, KK, Sandakan  ...)
I'm sure you all have other destination suggestions to add, so do share your views & we can come to a decision and start planning soon. Those familiar with the locations listed above, please share your experiences and when would be the best months to visit.

Since you might be checking out airfares, let me remind you of the lovely lasses in red from our friendly supporter Air Asia.

Over to you guys ...

  3. Who's lousy suitcase is that? Can throw away long time ago loh!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Ireland sounds interesting. We can also visit Philip Hii !

    ReplyDelete
  5. That's Mr. Bean's suitcase Kopi-Si and if you were to tell him to throw it away, well, he might cry and feel hurt so just let him keep it.

For me, any place will do as long as we are ALL together, travelling together, eat together, joke together, but not sleep together.

  6. Last year's trip to Siem Reap was good, man! Sinos was an awesome host. Let's have an even better trip this year.

  7. Sir WJ,

Mana mana pun boleh mah...as long as we have SJS boys around the intended destinations.

But of course, timing is important so as not to clash with our work...you know lah...working sama orang memang susah.

    Keep us posted Sir WJ.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Mana pun boleh ...

  17. CLK(m) will be back for a Sarawak visit early August. Maybe we can join him for an overland Sarawak Extravaganza (instead of Borneo Extravaganza) covering the way from Miri to Kuching. Cuti Cuti Malaysia first lah.
And then probably a trip to either Vietnam (HCMC, Hanoi &/or another town) or to Thailand (Bangkok & Chiang Mai).

    ReplyDelete
  18. Siem Reap, yeah, don't mind going over there again, still some 'unfinished' things to do. Can collect more sabun from the hotel some more, hehe.

No lah, girl from across the bridge ... at 50, we think we should be working to live, not living to work , just like WJ said. So we only work to live and go holiday . hehehe.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anybody been to Krabi in Thailand? What about Phi Phi ? What are they like?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Guys, another interesting place that we SHOULD visit is the Mulu (pinnacle and caves) at our very own backyard. I have wanted to visit the Mulu but timing is always not right.

Ben, is Maswing flying to Mulu daily? I doubt they fly from Sibu or Tg. manis a cowboy town. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  24. You're absolutely right, Gerard. Mulu and Niah are two places I've always said I wanted to visit, but until today have never done so.

I remember an embarassing moment back in 1976 or 77, when I had just gone to the UK for studies. An ang moh guy from my boarding school came up to me and was visibily delighted when he found that I was from Borneo. He said "Last summer, my friends and I backpacked and went all the way to Sarawak to visit your famous Niah and Mulu Caves". I knew what was coming next. "You came from Kuching, right? So you must have been there many times before" he said.

Well I can't quite remember what was my reply, beside the "ummms" and "errrs" and mumbling something about leaving the bathwater on ...

So I must remedy that ommision in life experience this year!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Twice daily from Miri to Mulu I think.
Let's have a trip there. And make it this year.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Guys,

I agree that we should discover our own backyard first for our class trip 2010.

Mulu is great. What about we ask Dtk JJ to do a rapid excusrion up the mighty Rejang River, Pelagus rapid and up to Belaga before they drown & dry all the rivers in S'wak for the damn dams ??

I remember uring our youngers days, Datk JJ would bring us to visit his longhouse in Ng. Mujong, Kapit and man, the boat ride up the might Rejang was a special experience.

So, let go local 1st OK?

    Bonne weekend

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ben, James and All, why not!

Ben, can you find out when is the best time to visit Mulu? ...so that we will be able to make early preapration esp on 'leave' matter. I can't wait till I am too old and can't walk around the caves and the pinnacles.

To be honest am having problem with my knees and must be signs of ageing. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  28. Gerald, direct flights from Kuching to Mulu is 3 times a week via Maswings. Not a good idea to go during landas season as it is slippery. Must stay at least 2 nights to visit all the 4 or 5 show caves (cant remember cos I went 8 years ago!!!!).I would recommend staying at the Royal Mulu resort as the ranger's park is really run down. Forget about the pinnacles lah, most of us will not be able to climb. The walk into the caves are already long and tiring and you want to climb the pinnacles which is steep and dangerous?? Maybe we can persuade the Maswing pilot to fly over the pinnacles when descending. hehehe....

    ReplyDelete
  32. Leo is in Miri ... Man about town too, i'm sure!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Will someone please take the lead on the Mulu & Niah trip? Preferably someone closer to the location or know the process. Just set a date and collect names and get it going.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would suggest Leo to be the organizer for the Mulu trip since he is in Miri. Leo, just set an appropriate date where it is a weekend with a public holiday.Over to you Leo.......

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yeap! totally agreed Leo is the guy to lead us. Go! Leo! Go!

Think there's a direct flight to Mulu from Kuching by Firefly. Need to check again la.

Mulu Resort, never been there, must be a very good place huh?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ehhhh? No takers? No lead organizer? C'mon guys!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Please propose the date/weekend.
Will try to come up with some info soon. Stay tuned guys (and gals).

    ReplyDelete
  38. Mulu and Niah caves nearby kah?

    ReplyDelete
  39. nearby where?
or do you mean nearby to each other? they are not. niah caves is near batu niah which is between miri and bintulu whereas mulu deep in the interior highlands.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Firefly flies direct to Mulu from Kuching. Recently introduced route by MAS.

    ReplyDelete
  41. nope. firefly does not fly operate in east malaysia.
but maswings flies kch/mulu once a day and miri/mulu twice a day.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm keen on the Mulu trip if the timing is right. After April is better. Anyone else? Please give Leo an indication of your interest.

    ReplyDelete
  43. How about Friday, 28th May, 2010? A public holiday, i.e. hari wesak so we will have three days including Sat and Sunday woh.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm with Norbert's date. Just take a day leave ie on Monday 31st May and you will have 6days. From 28th May (Wesak day) to 2nd June(Gawai holidays). Wow!

    ReplyDelete
  45. 28th May is pretty near to Gawai. Peak season and so peak rates for flight, accomodation etc.
How about later part of June or July?

Will check out on the packages available at Mulu and update you all.

  47. Pls login www.borneoresorts.net for more info on Mulu Resort

    ReplyDelete
  48. Do login to these sites as well : www.royalmuluresort.com
    www.mulupark.com

4 days/3 nites in mulu and for those who wishes to have a 'pre or post mulu, you may include a 2 days/1 nite in Oil town. Or even 1 day trip to Niah.

    ReplyDelete
  49. 4 days/3 nites should be fine I think. I would choose the 1 st proposed date but if the majority wants the 2 nd date, it's fine with me too.

Count me in Leo and I can sleep anywhere, I mean any room is ok for me, me not the choosy type la. Hehe.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'd prefer the first proposed date. August is Swinburne Uni convocation date and my daughter (if all goes well this final sem) is graduating by then. I am not sure the exact date of the convo, but if it does not clash with the trip, then I am in.

I don't mind sharing rooms either, but you guys MUST bring with you EAR PLUGS as I tend to SNORE very loud. LOL...

Jimmy, any decision on this once in a life time trip from you buddy. And to the rest...the more the merrier. Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  51. Probably a good idea to go for the hostel dormitory type accomodation if only to relive those schools and Uni days.
Then you can all pick out another ticklish fellow for some fun. Pip will be the choice if he comes along.
But not sure if those CEOs, Directors, Senior Execs and other professionals among you are game for it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Leo, it's a time to set aside all the "pangkats". The pangkats are to be kept at the office. Boys just wanna have fun. Cheers.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Pip is a lot stronger and meaner these days and you guys will have to look for some "fun" somewhere else!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hostel dorm is ok for me, like I said before, anything is ok for me. Important thing is we must all get together, enjoy ourselves right?

    ReplyDelete
  55. End of June is our fiscal year end, so might be hard to take off cos will be chasing for $$$$ for the company ... unless all of you help and buy one or two Cisco or Linksys routers or switches each .. then can go end June.

    Aug looks better for me.

Or we can take a two days off and make oit a long weekend in July.

    ReplyDelete
  56. HELLLOOOOOO .... ANYBODY THERE???

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hi Leo,

My family and I plan to be in Brunei on the 16th August. Perhaphs you can help plan a trip for the 19th/20th/21st Aug for Mulu?

WJ is keen to come along and it seems many are interested to explore the beauty of Mulu.

Hope there will be lots of interest!

    ReplyDelete
  58. So far:
WJ, CLK(M), NL, Gerard, BW ......
how does CLK(M)'s date sound to you all?

    ReplyDelete
  59. CLK(M)'s date is okay for me, a weekend after all.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Actually, the dates are not so ok for me. Trying to sort some matters.
But no worries, ok or not, Muku will be between 18 - 22 August.
Will update on accomodation options and estimated cost soon.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Guys, Licky aka Lipp Kee aka CLK will be back mid-August. He should be in Kuching around 15th August (CLK, correct me if I got it wrong) and then fly off to Miri on 19th.
Plans are being finalised to have the Mulu trip between 19-21 August (3D2N) in conjunction with his visit.
Travel agencies are quoting as follows:
    1. RM799 per pax with rooms on twin-sharing basis at Royal Mulu Resort and inclusive of Kuching/Mulu return air-ticket.
    2. RM788 per pax - same as above except return air-ticket for Miri/Mulu.
For those interested, you may opt for No. 1 if you do not wish to see Oil town.
The charges also include guided tours around the Mulu National Park incl. visiting the Caves, Pinnacles and Canopy Walk. Other activities may be considered and arranged.
The above is being arranged with the assistance of Ah Won aka Ah Hong who happens to be CLK's cousin. He is attached to a tour agency and we can expect good and reasonably priced packages from him.
Those interested may post your intentions queries here and I will try to answer any queries.
I recall the interest shown by Norbert, Gerard, WJ among others. It is still about 8 weeks away and hopefully the numbers will increase.
Over to you guys (and gals?).
BTW, Licky seems to be the name Ah Won has for CLK. Cheers.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I arrive Kuching on the 16th morning, then leave for Miri on the 19th morning. Hope to catch up with some of you while in Kuching, certainly will spend more time with those who are going to Mulu.

So, boys and families....its time to explore Mulu together!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Yeah, finally we are going to Mulu. So, Leo, where do I book my ticket, etc, etc?

There,s a travel agent having the package to Mulu but then I didn't ask how much it costs.

I opt for no.1 Leo, count me in. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh dear. 19th August is a THURSDAY and there's NO Kch/Mulu flight that day.
Probably have to reschedule to 20-22 August to accomodate those flying there from Kuching.
Norbert, it would be great if you could kindly check with that travel agent as well

    ReplyDelete
  65. Okay Leo, will check with the travel agent asap.

So, date is fixed on the 20-22 August right?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Leo, I already check with the travel agent, 1 only, and the package is RM827 per pax, two to go, everything in, like tour fees, hotel room(sharing) breakfast, dinner, lunch, etc.

That's the promotion price woh, no promo it's RM1027. Air fare from Kuching to Mulu is RM287, both ways, by MASwings.

So, I need another person to go or book the trip with me. Anyone from Kuching?

Promo ends at 18th July, 2010.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Norbert, why not sponsor a siao loong nee?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Anon 7.52pm, brother, you are cute. Sponsor you better, at least after the trip, we are still friends but for siao loong nee, well, you don't see her anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  69. All the Brothers are still so cool
