Name the Town

.
Here's a little quiz to test how well you know your Sarawak. If you have been travelling around the towns and cities of our great state, some of these statues and monuments should be quite familiar to you. I must admit that when Leo Sia first sent these photos to me, I was completely stumped by some of them. It just goes to show that I've got to do a lot more sightseeing within Sarawak.

Out of the following, let's see how many you score (one is an obvious giveaway, of course) ...

Town 1

Town 2

Town 3

Town 4

Town 5

Town 6

Town 7

Town 8

Town 9

Town 10

An added incentive is that the first one who gets all ten absolutely correct will receive some automotive accessories. So what are you waiting for ? Send your attempts to me at jslyong@hotmail.com .

  6. Is picture 1 Sibu? How come the swan statue is different from the one shown in Wikipedia?

  7. Yeah, listen to Leonardo ... he's the only one who really knows where those statues are located.

  8. Wow....that's something entirely different for a change. I could have named any famous landmark in the world....but...this time..I have to admit, there's still a lot of catching up to do..as far as my local geography/history is concerned. Only know Pics 1,3,5,9 & 10 ( Sibu,Serian,Sarikei, Saratok & Kuching )Wild Guess - Pics 2, 4 & 7 (Mukah),(Lawas),(Miri)

But I'm just curious - what are the two sea-horses doing there ? Or the fish without water ? And the Cat without a fish nearby ? hehehe, just kidding.

Perhaps a brief note on the "history" or reason(s) behind the "landmarks" ?

Please don't keep us in suspense...answers,answers...already 52 years...can't afford to wait any longer !

Good work WSJ...and thanks, Leonard, for your contribution !!!

    Please keep it up !

    Cheers !

  10. Chun chun I was traveling up and on my way I saw photos 1,3,5,for the time being. Photo 5 pineapple was constructed by my brother years ago. He has his signature inside wall of the fruit.

Saw a 'Ben Wong Advocates' signboard somewhere at corner shop house near the pineapple fruit but didn't have my camera with me so......

In Bintulu now and moving up to Miri later where we will see the sea horse.

Leo, where's the two loving doves? also constructed by my brother.

  11. Norbert, when will you be in Miri?

  12. 1. Sibu. Picture taken near Kingwood hotel by the Esplanade (2005). What does swan got to do with Sibu? In fact Sibu is famous for its dabai (O kana or black olive), try imagining 'O kana' as a symbol...Alamak!...one big black fruit.

    2. Mukah, famous for ikan.

    3. Could be YB William Mawan's hometown...Pakan. But I guess Serian's symbol is also the durian. Serian has the best durian I presume.

    4. wild guess...Lawas?

    5. Pineapple town..Sarikei

    6. Spaoh

    7. Miri

    8. ??

    9. Saratok oil palm?? Looked like Kanowit Town.

    10. Kuching

  13. OK, Edmund & Gerard ... i.ve checked with Leo, and based on your answers/guesses, each of you have gotten 7/10 correct.

Only thing is we ain't gonna tell you which is right and which wrong for now. Let others have a go at it.

  14. anyone remember a magazine called DOLPHIN that was around when we were young?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Leo, I'm in BSB now, i.e. 31st May. Going down to Bintulu tomorrow and from there fly back to Kuching. My brother wants to stay another night in Bintulu but I can't so have to fly back lo.

  16. DOLPHINS, PERINTIS - magazines from the 60s and eanrly 70s, our primary school days.

BTW Gerard, Sibu also had Dolphin statues.

Norbert, have you found out from your brother about the 2 loving doves statues.

Seems that nobody has any idea of No. 8. Not even a wild wild guess.

  17. Leo, what about the two doves? My brother said they have been shifted to another location not far from the former original site. The doves are in Sri Aman.

Think no.8 is in Bintangor, not sure.

No.2 fish in Mukah seems a little 'rotten' ho? Not very fresh with the dull color.

No.6 fish also not so fresh. Don't think I would buy any fish with that color skin.

  18. Norbert, Bintangor (Binatang) is famous for her 'Bintang kam' (Bintangor orange), hence the town's symbol. Bintang kam is quite sour and it is good for ladies in their pregnancies.

Bintangor, is a quiet town now. The port was closed in 1990 as no vessels berthed due to good connectivity. From Sarikei 30mins drive and from Sibu also 30 mins. Many Sibu and Sarikei folks go there just to have breakfast. Famous for its Indian rojak and Tumpik (kind of pancake). Cheers

  19. Leo, there are dolphins situated on both sides of RPA's riverfront (wharf). They are for berthing purposes.

Thanks for the pics, Leo. It's kind of learning the state's geography. Anyway some town's symbol do not reflect the town. Cheers

  20. No. 8 & 9 seems to have stumped everyone.
A clue for No. 8 - it is at the same town as another statue among the 10 featured.
A clue for No. 9 - starts with the letter 'B'.

  21. Pic 8 is also Lawas. It is located just 50 metres from the Buffalo depicted in Pic 4.

Pic 8 is Bekenu near Miri. Wonder how many know of this town,
