Ad Astra from Years Ago ...

A couple of weeks ago, BC sent me this old photo from 1975 (I think).

Anyway it was the year David Ling was Editor of Ad Astra, and BC, JK and I (then in Form 4) were all on the editorial committee.

I was also able to get my hands on a few copies of past Ad Astra magazines from our time, thanks to Leo and some friendly staff of the St Joe office. Looking through them certainly brings back sweet memories.

It was also amazing what we could do before the age of personal computers, desktop publishing software and digital cameras. When we said "cut and paste", we REALLY meant cut (with scissors) and paste (with glue)  :-)

Anyway, here are some covers from the 70s ...

Sorry, some of them are in black & white ... only got photocopied versions. But will replace them as and when I have the coloured versions.

I also remember the "Fourth Former's Magazine" that I was editor of, back in 1975 when we were in the supposed honeymoon year of Form 4. That was a fun experience. Another publication I worked on was the Interact Club magazine ... can't remember if it was 1975 or 76. Hey, what can I say ... I like writing, lah.

Anybody still have one of those somewhere in your storeroom ? I'd sure love to have a copy.

  5. James, do you have a copy of the '77 edition? It was a bloody terrible production. The printers stuffed it up. Half of it was on glossy paper and the other half on plain paper. And the photos did not come out well at all. I can still remember it after all these years!

  6. WJ sure has the '77 copy. Lots of material for the blog here. Be prepared to cringe when WJ publishes them here.

  7. Well, we've put up the cover of the Ad Astra '77 issue ... just for you, Panjang. And the cover looks pretty good, if that's any consolation. I've not had the opportunity to see the inside yet.

Anyway, Ms. ex-Marian @ 6.05pm, what makes you so sure it was not David's first.

And welcome to this blog. We look forward to your continued participation. Do forgive 'Very Safely Anonymous @ 7.13pm who must have gotten very excited to see someone of the fairer sex here. Afterall, we we do not see many of them here. Do get more of your mates (Marians or otherwise) to drop by.

    Cheers.

We must keep this blogspot light hearted and in good spirit. This blog is a great place for all of us to get in touch with each other. We are proud to tell our children about it and about our former class mates and school mates.

  28. After more than 60,000 hits and countless comments, it is, indeed, pleasantly surprising to notice that none of the entries here is tainted with uncalled-for remarks tinged with bad choice of words. At 50, I'm sure we have amassed substantial vocab for vulgarity whether for fun or for flaming others but please refrain from using them here to show our appreciation and respect to the creator of this website as he has put in a lot of effort and time for this noble cause of re-connecting us again -- and of course, as a sign of our maturity.

  44. Mr & Mrs WJ,
was just wondering - at the time this pic was taken, has your courtship begun?
Or to rephrase it, Mr WJ, were you aware at the time the pic was taken that Mr Austin Voon is to be your future bro-in-law?

BTW, Austin was the Head Section Leader of SJS Red Cross when I joined them in 1974 or 1975. Still remember the 5-ton bike that he used to ride. And also the shoplot next to the drugstore at 3rd mile that he stayed at.

    ReplyDelete
  48. LK, 5 ton bike is the type of bicycle that older men used to ride in the old days, yunno, the ones with bigger wheels, longer body fame, saddle quite high ones? I think there are still a few around Kuching being used to sell ice cream.
