More on the Rugby Boys of St Joe

Back in April & May, we posted some pictures and comments on the Rugby boys of St Joe. You can review them by clicking on the links below.

This morning, BC just sent me an interesting new photo of the team. I'll let him & others comment on when, where & on what occasion it was taken (if you still remember).

Here are the zooms ...

I'm sure you'll recognise many of our old friends, as well as the coaches.

  3. I don't quite remember which year this was but I suspect this was the Form 5 year. I was just a reserve and didn't really know how to knock around with the big guys. I recognize Stanley Guang and Stephen Yaman. Julian Wee was always the gentleman and at that time probably had a better head on his shoulders than most of us in the class. We were always fooling around whereas he was more serious with class work.

  4. Hi...guys
This photo really baffles me, I just cannot recollect such great occasion!!!. LOL. We must have won something in rugby but in which competition, I am not so sure. Looked a bit like inter-class rugby? Can anyone verify? I can name the following.....
In the back row: Bro Adrian, ??, myself with Nick, Stanley, Ambrose, late Julian, A Azahar and Bro Mark.
Front row: ??, Philip, Seng Chai, Khoon Teck, Stephen, Bertram, ??

We owe so much of our early development - physically, mentally & spiritually - to those men in white. If you're reading this, Brothers Columba, Adrian & Mark, THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!

  9. Hi...BC/NL
Thanks for the reminder, of course. How could I not remember Sin Foh and especially William. Where are they now? Anyone?. Can you recall the event?
Great memories again, more contributions please. Thanks again.

  11. JL, The guy next to Khoon Teck, you mention Stephen? Could it be Oliver Lim?

  12. Bradon Lee was my close neighbour in Kenyalang Park. We lived on the same street. We spent much time together and I rode with him on his black motor bike. Those were good memories...We went to after school events much on his motor....
He was a sportsman who represented SJS in the long distant events.
If you are reading...i am glad i am reconnected with you...Sin Foh, my friend.

  13. The 2nd guy in the front row I believe is Teo Soo Hock.

  14. My apology....it was Soo Hock and I thought I was Philip Chin. The chap next to Khoon Teck was Stephen Yaman. Looked like all the guys were from Arts 1, so it must be the inter class rugby competition with Bro Mark who was our Form Teacher.

  15. i think it WAS Philip ... albeit a younger, hairier version ... LOL

  16. Hi Guy , I told you that it's Mr Teo Soo Hock.

  17. Edmund...an extract from James Ritchie's article on the 50th anniversary of KRFCSeptember 14, 2009 at 9:27 PM

The gentleman standing next to Bro. Adrian - should be the Late Frank Gaffney, an icon of Kuching Rugby...ate, slept and played Rugby.

In 1969 I led St Thomas against St Joseph School which was skippered by Shookry Gani. We lost in the final by three points, thanks to St Joes nippy winger Dr John Jong. After the match Shookry and I were selected to play for the Club, he said.
He added that while the club celebrates its 50th anniversary, it will remember the great KRFC players such as the late Frank Gaffney, George Ang, Morgan Bayang, John Hodges and Clive Howell, to name a few.

  18. CLK, Brandan Lee is not only your close neighbour and friend, he is also your (our) RC mate. BTW, he is married to a Marian.

  19. Edmund ,

The guy next to bro Adrian was not Frank Gurfney . He was one of the regular refs for rubgy in those days. Frank passed away 1-2 years ago . i agreed with JL that it must had been the interclass rugby.

  21. Naaah, WJ, Not Philip Chin lah.....
I recognise him for sure. Remember I "shot" him?
    Ha ha

  22. Teo Soo Hock, that's for sure. We were in the boy scouts together.
By the way where is he now?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey, The 1St guy in the front row, is that Chang Soo Chuan ?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lipp Kee, you might have shot me(literally with an air rifle) but I lived to tell the tale! That's me in the front row, 2nd left.

  25. If I remember correctly, the Ang Moh next to Bro.Adrian was an ex All Blacks player from NZ who was with us for a short stint. He spent most of his time coaching the running backs while Bro. Adrian concentrated on the forwards.

  32. Hello kawan,

The last time I met Ang Adzhar was in 2002 in KL hotel by accident. He told he was working in a minyal company in Yemen.

I still have his old name card but not sure if he is still there. Abg, if you happen to read this, do let us know your whereabout.

    Cheers,
    Sinos

  34. The guy next to Bro Adrain is not Frank Gaffney.

He could be Chris Gurr, a top notch referee,i enjoyed playing in the games he referred.

He was quick , fair and always at where the action was. He took pains to explain the rules when he blew the whistle for an infringement; rugby can be a very technical game.
The St Joe boys had a bit of advantage over the rural ironman-s and kaki ayam-s like drahman jaladdin who could run ceaselessly but didnt know that they cant hit or pass the ball forward ( no offence meant, drahman kawan )

will be interesting if someone can confirm whether the guy is Chris.

Yup, I think it's about time to give PC our unwavering moral support. The poor chap has been blatantly attacked left and right by some insensitive souls every time the subjects "hair" and "geli/ticklish" come up.
    Bravo Lee Kien!

  38. PC is a great chap. Although famous for being "geli/ticklish", he obligingly tried very hard to sit still for my little daughter to tickle him, which amused her no end.

    Another PC supporter. :-)

  39. Naughty, naughty Sharlene!
Should've taken picture to see PC's expression.
    My sympathy to him.
