Upper 6 Science (1978)

Here's the class photo of some of our friends in their final year at St Joe.

Thanks to KC for contributing this ...

Ahh, so many familiar faces ... What? Only four roses among the 22 thorns?

And I see that old "Ah Chui" was the Form Master.

Here are some zooms ...

  1. wow, a colour photo from those ancient days.
however, a shrunken class of 5Sc '76, even with a few add-ons from across the road.
naming them all should be a easy task.
    KC?

  3. btw, KC...Why were some of you wore dark trousers and the rest of the boys wore white ones?

  4. Notice also how the dark pants always goes with cool dark glasses. Fashion statement of 1978 ? LOL

  5. John, the government introduced standard olive coloured pants/shorts for boys and the blue/white uniforms for girls throughout M'sia. I guess we were then at the transition period when white pants were still allowed. Eventually they all had to be the olive ones.

Remember the days when each school had its own school uniform? St Joe's was grey shorts. I think STPS was pink checks and STSS was some browny/beige thing.

Yeah the dark glasses were popular then - photogrey I think they were called. Quite good as they became dark in the sun but were lighter in the shade.

  6. Yes KC. Photogrey - my preferred lens then though I was accused by the pink panther of hiding behind tinted sunglasses in 1976.

  7. WJ, there were 18 handsome lads and 4 blushing beauties. I thought my counting was bad lol. I think it was the smallest ever Upper 6 Sc class at St Joe.

  8. Oops, who can count with all the calculators and computers around?

I recall seeing photos in some old Ad Astras showing Form 6 classes that were predominantly ladies. Was that in or around 1978 too?

  9. Anyone has contact with LJN? He was a tough little boy then....

  10. WJ, I wouldn't say that the classes were predominantly ladies but yes, there was quite a large intake of the fairer sex into Lower 6 in 1977. However, most of them went overseas on government scholarships and didn't make it to Upper 6.

  14. My goodness, KC. I had forgotten that nickname until you mentioned it. You have the memory of an elephant. Btw, how did he get that nickname? Anyone can remember?

  15. George, can't say I do ... but I do remember something about Hollang's cow being killed by a coconut! Some essay he wrote, I think. CLF, if you're reading this, can you remind us?

  16. Yup, "Hollang" is in Singapore. Have directed him to this blog.

  17. I remember Mr Joseph aka Ah Chui was a real grumpy Physics teacher, but he had his favourites in our class, TTK and LNH, as they were electronic whizzes.

  18. Yep, Ah Chui is sort of grumpy. But he sure knows his stuff. I remember him carrying his teaching materials in a rattan basket.
