Update on first Virtual Cocktail Party, 30/05/09

The first Virtual Cocktail Party, conducted using Windows Live Messenger yesterday (30th May 2009), was attended by 12 individuals:
xxxxx

  • PC, KL, Malaysia
  • JK, Plymouth, UK
  • HBC, Cambridge, UK
  • KC (Panjang), Perth, Australia
  • GL, Kuching, Malaysia
  • Mrs GL, Kuching, Malaysia ... briefly
  • CLK, Vancouver, Canada
  • JL, Huddersfield, UK
  • LS (Leo), Kuching, Malaysia
  • Ms CLK (Lee Kien), Singapore
  • JY, Singapore
  • Ms VKL (Mrs JY), Singapore ... briefly
Not a fantastic turnout, but not bad for a first attempt. Some of us "met" classmates and friends for the first time in many years. So hopefully the next time we do this (and we will!) , we'll have many more joining us.

I dunno about you, but when we were accessing from my place in Singapore, we were enjoying some great wine and crisps. Hope you guys had some nice snacks too. And most importantly, hope you all had a good time.

Do share your feedback on this inaugural virtual cocktail party ... what went well, what could have been improved, what would we do differently in future, and any other points.

  2. It was not as chaotic as i expected it would be...I have lots of fun chatting with old classmates...my tea and whisky dipped biscuits certainly kept me inline with all those who were drinking..

  3. We have 2 MBs & 2 Assembly speakers for a certian Malaysian state. WE also have 2 Presidents for a certain political party.
But we genuinely have 2 CLKs here and both were at the party here.

  5. Things I now know that I didn't before last night's cocktail party:
    - CLK (male version) and JK have 3 daughters whereas PC has 3 "cats";
    - CLK enjoys whisky laced tea;
    - BC hasn't got a clue what he's doing in Cambridge yet he hasn't washed his car for 2 months;
    - GL's better half was highly popular in her heyday;
    - Leo has an endless supply of beer mugs (for celebratory tuak);
    - WJ likes to shout;
    - CLK (female version) has sound advice for all to stop and smell the roses;
    - and most astounding of all - JL is Ah Kong to a 5 year old grandson!!! Can anyone beat that!
It was also funny that Leo's 9 year old daughter asked why these old fogies are acting like little kids.

  6. JL an akong for 5 years. Wow, the last time I saw John Jr was - was it in the late 80s?

  7. For an endless supply of beer mugs, pls type (b) when on MSN Live. Likewise, you will get get other symbols by typing the various alphabets in brackets. Try it when you are next online.

  8. Hi guys!! Back at home base!! Boy was it fun!! At one point in time we were all rolling on the floor with laughter.Lets "gossip" more about our heart Dr the next time. My hubby was really sporting so was Mrs GL.

He really went to several temples and WJ's Dad kept on asking where my "Lau Ang" was and when he was coming back..

WJ...is it possible to give me a transcript from 1030pm-215am for remembrance?

  9. Hi...all
I think that was a very good session despite a smaller than expected participation from other old friends. Thank you, WJ. It can only get better I hope. My grandson is from my daughter's and he is called Jaylen (you can see his photos on my facebook account). Hey, Leo: tell your daughter that it is an old men's perogative to be silly and act childish especially after a few drinks, albeit virtually or otherwise...lol.

  10. BTW, may I use this opportunity and behalf of everyone to wish our dayak friends a "Selamat Gawai", have plenty of tuak on me!!!!.

    Best wishes

  11. The last time I met JL was when he was working for "Boon Seng" in Kg.
Yes, remember him telling me that would be moving to UK.

Sorry guys, I invited the ladies of STS Form 5 (1976), but as you can see, we only had the presence of a couple.

Maybe I need to send out the invite much, much earlier next time ... need more days to put on virtual make-up, do virtual hair-do, find the best virtual party dress ... LOL.

Ladies, if you are reading this, let us know how you have been & keep checking this blog, so that you can join us for our next Virtual Cocktail Party !!!

  13. Selamat Gawai Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai
Couldn't join the party last night cos' no MSN.
Just imagine when old friends meet and chat, stories never end.
Got to fix my MSN now for the next party.
    Bye and best wishes !

  14. KC arrived at the party armed with a rather impressive albeit very long moniker somewhere along the lines of #(A)2,@(KC)66 *(0) etc. Luckily he shortened it to Panjang later into the party as GL the latecomer, asked who the person with the funny name was!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Robert, looking forward to chatting with you soon.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think KC's moniker included his accounting code, complete with cost centre, expense sub-type and payment status. Trust an accountant (esp one with 21 digits) to think of all that !!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, I thot KC was scolding us with all those @#(*(0)!!% expletives ... LOL

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lee Kien - sorry, no transcript available. At least not from me, as I turned off the chat logging function some time back.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sure baffled you lot, didn't I? Even I didn't know what it all meant. What to do when it's my first time on MSN. Thanks for all your real-time tutorials.
I thought it was pretty amazing how 3 hours just went in a flash. You guys were still going when I retired at 1.30am.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I do have the transcript for the first session or first window. not for the session under the second window which i forgot/failed to save. those who want it, can get it from WJ with whom the document will be lodged.
    Leo

    ReplyDelete
  21. wow just realised that the transcript for session 1 alone came up a good 31 pages. it is a real pity (my apologies) that I failed to save session 2.
    Leo

  22. Tks Leo. At one point in time when wine n crisps, nuts were served ,and later tea ,didnt even touch it cos i couldnt type as fast as you guys.Missed a lot of "action" as KL,hubby n me were chatting.

WJ,,transcript will suffice as my birthday present Haha!!! Or you wanna hold it to "blackmail me" in lieu of MB pencil? Perhaps i should keep my mouth shut and not give you any brilliant ideas....
GL i need to engage us as my defending lawyer..we should strategise our moves ahead of WJ's like chess players...

KC ,first time msning for me 2.I thought i was the only ancient one.Hubby commented perhaps now will appreciate why my daughter spent so much time virtually net working with her pals and should be more easy on her and not pick on her..

Had fully recovered from "virtual hangover" but i must say the Penfold Red was superb. Tks so much WJ n Mrs WJ for a super party.

P/s ...brought parties packs from Xmas but forgot to take out and use them..ah well..will keep it for next time...

    Cheers and take care...

  25. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. oh yes!!! now WJ, what are you going to do for an encore? expectations are now high. this blog is now so much a part of all our daily routines. logging in is like brushing my teeth now. if i forget to do it, it feels like something is missing.

guys and gals, you have to help WJ and give him some ideas what new subjects to put in.

i very much enjoyed the virtual party though i came a bit late as i was attending my daughter's school concert followed by late night supper at padungan road. you know kuching, lah. stay out late, must always follow with supper in town. in the past, it was goo bak mee or hu tau moi with tauhu chui at open air market.

this time round, we went to a new malay eatery called SAMBAL. i had nasi lemak which was nice. gina had ayam penyet which was not quite as nice as the one they served at a shack next to the town mosque.

  32. What a charming young lady. She certainly deserves a present from Uncle Jimmy.
And congratulations on another milestone. The second 10,000 was reached in a little over a month - I may not be too far wrong when I said earlier that the magical milestone of 100,000 may be achieved in a matter of months.
    Happy Gawai to all.

  37. Nice pictures !!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like the photo of the participants. They come in all shapes, sizes and states of hairiness. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hey, I like the pictures. It looks like that old TV game show "Celebrity Squares" !

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm sorry I missed the party!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Aha, Mrs GL, as lovely as ever 30 years on. Is that a very recent pic? Pity those who failed to make their moves 30 years ago.
And another lovely lass in Mrs WJ aka JY. And Madamme CLK - trying to recall if CSK is as charming as her elder sis.
Sure admire you fellows. Yes, pity those who failed to 'go for it' over 30 years ago.

And next, pics of other halves of the others pls.
    Leo

    ReplyDelete
  42. Leo,

    All Old Teresians are charmers!!

We don't have to be so formal amongst friends. Btw, i am never addressed as Madam Chen, makes me sound so old....Please msm WJ and he will advise the "proper way" salutation to use.....

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hey, WJ. Nice photos how about then and now ones against each one of us - '76 and '09
Guys aside, I think you ladies age very very well. Are you sure these are recent photos. All of you looked early 30s!!!!. Do you credit your partners for that?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi JL,

I can assure you those are recent photos.I have to take credit for taking one of them, right WJ?

To be fair to the boys, if you notice most girls would supply their best shots!! We also have costmetic enhancements !!

The ones which are posted by WJ are candid shots which WJ has in his collections so guys please replace with nicer looking ones...

    Secrets for looking young?.....

Be happy and like i said take time to smell the roses and spend more time with our old friends!!
Indeed this year is one of my happiest year cos i have re-connected with my old friends..Its reconnecting and we just simply picked up from where we had last met....

Old friends are like Wine..they matured with age..are they are treasured...Kuching friends are the best... we are bonded and there is an unspoken bond....

Certainly i also credit my partner and he is most supportive. BTW, he was also present during our party.

Happiness are not fleeting moments.I seek happiness in every minute, every day..

I live life to the fullest and i treasure every moment. I also try to capture these happy moments and i take time to reflect these moments so i am happy every minute of the day....

    Everyone look so HAPPY....

Have a GREAT and HAPPY DAY!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yup, Lee Kien took the shot of my missus only on Sunday. I can also vouch for the fact LK is one of the most upbeat and happy people I know.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thanks for the kind words, Leo. I'm flattered. The passport photo was taken 3 months ago.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi All,

Tks Regina for reminding-i forgot to be humble and thank everybody for their compliments..A big Thank You...make me happy already!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. That's right, Lee Kien. Makes me happy too!!! Thank you, John and all others for the complimentary words.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Are you Regina Ng who studied in St Pat ?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Regina, were you also St. Mary's Form 1 to Form 5?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Can Anon 4.11pm and Anon 4.51pm pls identify yourselves? I shall have to let my wife answer the 2 questions herself. She's out at the moment. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  52. In answer to the two questions, yes and yes.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Wow, interest in Mrs. GL. Repeat, it is Mrs. GL ok? And Mr. is a lawyer. Anons, have to be cautious.
Regina, which class of Form 3 (St Mary's) were you in? 3L, 3M or 3S?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Regina,

Would you know any Marians from our year Form 5 1976? Most of us that year went to St Tom. together with Marians. My memories of St Tom are very blur...cos few of us left after a term.

Do you know Catherine Hong? She is Mrs Harry Goh.Harry Goh was in Form 5 Sc 1976..

I bumped into Tan Lee Choo last month..of all places Mizu, Bangsar Village KL together with Susie Wong , (Teresian dont know which year).Perhaps Leo you may like to englighten us?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Ehhh, Lee Kien, why me?
    Leo

    ReplyDelete
  56. Dont be shy loh..Just in case you know them only...No offence lay...I did say Perhaps..

GL -i am not suggesting anything right? I have "escape" word right....?

    ReplyDelete
  57. yep no offence I suppose, let off the hook by 'perhaps'. Still, let me consult THE LAWYER that is GL.
Anyway, let me consult my lawyer sister in Perth. Perhaps (haha, using that word) she may like to and be able to enlighten us as she was St. Mary's 1975.
    Leo

    ReplyDelete
  58. So ... WJ, when are you going to have the next virtual party?

    ReplyDelete
  59. This topic has broke the record for number of comments posted...guess the female presences was the main attraction...
not to mention the "nice" looking women photos posted......

    ReplyDelete
  60. CLK, did u ever think it might be the ladies who keep logging on to see the "nice" looking men photos posted ????? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  61. Agreed, Anon Jun 5 2009 2.28pm...

Thats why we girls are a wee bit smarter than guys...we supply "professionally" taken shots. Never mind all is not lost..i am sure WJ can replace the photos right WJ??

We also have added advantage over the guys..this thing called make up..

For those in Kuching you may want to go to Anna Studio..see Peter say Lee Kien's friend

Those in KL i can take for free..

    ReplyDelete
  62. Aha, business brainwave !!! This is where WJ makes $$$ from the blog. For replacing candid photos with professionally taken ones !!! Any takers, guys? Only RM10 per replacement, since you already have discounted or free photos taken courtesy of Lee Kien. :-)

For Photoshop touch-ups, we can separately negotiate pricing . Hee hee hee !!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Aiya another brainwave...

WJ has other professional qualities..since we are good friends..he had shown he is capable of reducing the number of years from pictures..take why i said want to learn tricks from him...i can only take current pictures.. he can reduce years or even decades.. Never mind lah i can still take current photos for free but to WJ still have to pay so i can take the 50 per cent!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. For the next Virtual Party, we must try out this new software called OoVoo !! It allows up to 6 user screens to be concurrently displayed. Check it out and download the software at

    www.oovoo.com

    ReplyDelete
  65. Next Virtual party will be video conferencing. Afterall CISCO is buying Tandberg. And who's CISCO's Regional Director?
    Haha.
For those who do not know Tandberg, go google it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Tandberg? That'll be very powerful in the enterprise space. On personal front, I still think the Flip pocket camcorder buy was more exciting. And how I wish the next acquisition would be some slick sound equipment company like Bang & Olufson or Bose, so I can get my discounted staff purchase. Must have a word with John. LOL
