Gone Fishing

It was such an amazing coincidence that while I was looking at reviews of a short film called "Gone Fishing" this morning, I received an email from ELAS. He had forwarded me a couple of old photos (courtesy of Jude Jong) and after looking at the first one, I knew that I had to share it soon (though I was tempted to save it for the Grand Reunion). The film also linked to the theme of departed friends, which was also recently touched on in the blog.

"Gone Fishing" was released in 2008 by producer and writer Chris Jones. It is the touching story of a boy and older man coming to terms with bereavement through their shared love of fishing, and the legend of Goliath, the biggest pike ever caught.

Now take a look at the youthful faces featured in this next picture ...

I'm sure this was after one of their longkang fishing exploits. Note the plastic bag of fishies held by Jude.

I'll let you guys name the individuals in the photo.

Happy reminiscing ...

  3. Ben, you're good, all corect, 100%, A+ for you. Photographer could be the officer from the agriculture training center and the place is Tarat, according to Jude, but could be at the center at Jln. Ong Tiang Swee. The fishes they are holding are 'gifts' from the center for them to take home. Our good friend Subramanian is holding a bag of fishes too but too shy to show it. I understand Robert Chang Kok Cheng has been approached but he declined, not sure about Abang Arifin, where is he' anyone?

  5. Thanks, WSJ for posting the photo.

Though in black and white, ( black for the background and white for the uniforms worn ) this photo brought back fond memories of old.

There were plenty of foliage in the background in those days and fish were equally plentiful in the "longkangs" Where have they all gone to ???

Subra was cut-out to be a policeman - even posing with his hands down and standing at full attention !!! ( and smiling too )

Wonder what Abang was holding in his hands ??? Looked like plastic bags for "sharing" the fish after the photo session, I guess.

Batholomew Sinos must have lost a few buttons from his shirt after the mad scramble for the fish !! Mal-nutrition was evidently present, judging from the exposed chestful of "tulang" hehehe...just kidding.

And to have 3 of them attending the ReUnion is indeed something to cherish !!! Let's keep our fingers crossed that Robert and Abang will turn up. Then we can have another similar photo session - this time with a Giant Japanese Carp in each person's hands.

    Cheers !!!

    Edmund.

  7. My,just look at the difference size between Abang and Robert. Maybe I will drop by into Robert's place to persuade him to go to our GRD, maybe to give him a surprise too. What about Abang? Any phone contact of his anyone? I think I have ways and means to get them to the GRD.

  8. I remembered Abg. Ariffin (mistook him for Suffian). He was in the class of SJS 1971. I always thought Jude Jong was one year senior.

    cheers

  11. I had a short spell with Shell. Left to work with Telecoms for about 3 years, then to Port Authority. I have retired from the govt service and now a pensioner. However, I was reemployed in a GLC with Tg. manis Integarted Port since may 2009.

    Nice to meet you, Norbert!

    Cheers Gerard

  12. So Gerard, you did work with Shell back then huh, so I was told. You are only 50, how come retired so early? I thought gov't employees only retire at age 55, then 56, now 58?(next will be 60) Early retirement I suppose, getting two salaries every month now right? All the best to you!

Btw,your daughters are at Swinburne right? My eldest daughter's there too, 2nd yr. Last yr she did her foundation there too.

  13. Norbert, I wanted to retire early because I bought a house in Kuching. Moreover my family (wife and children) are there too. So I decided to retire early ie jan 2009.

However in May 2009, I was offered a job with Tg. Manis port(TMP), Mukah. TMP was extablished in February 2009 and operational in August 2009. The offer was 'boleh tahan' for Sibu standard. It is correct am getting two salaries every month.

The port is at Tg. Manis, Mukah Div., but I am in Sibu (Hq) temporary. We will move to Tg Manis in 2012 once the new Admin block is completed. TMP is a Govt Link Co(GLC) and the retirement age is similar to the govt also at 58.

My eldest is taking a degree in Accounting. Next sem is her finals. She will continue to get her CPA Australia once graduated.

My 2nd is studying diploma in Business and IT. She has another year to complete.

All the best to you too, Norbert!

Hope you will have fun tomorrow night. It's good to meet and catch up with old,old buddies.

    Cheers!
