It was such a pleasant surprise last week when I received an email from none other than Wee Ek Hock. I haven't met him for about fifteen years. He chanced across this blog after reading the Borneo Post Online article ! (Good work again, Georgie boy!)
I learnt that our friend moved to Auckland, New Zealand about 6.5 years ago, after some years of doing business in Sarawak. He seems to enjoy the life in NZ, and is now with an American firm called Ramset.
He has three girls aged 23,21 and 13.The eldest two are in university.while the youngest is in high school. His wife, an Operating Theater nurse, works at a local private hospital in NZ. She was previously with Normah Medical Centre in Kuching.
Here is a recent photo of Ek Hock and wife ...
Ek Hock asked me to convey this heart-warming message: "send my regards to everyone who still remembers me and tell them no hard feelings, what is done cannot be undone so we move on and still be friends".
His email is wehjj@xtra.co.nz and he would certainly love to get in contact with old buddies.
Glad to be reconnected, old friend !

Good to see you, WEH !
ReplyDeleteHai there WEH, do hope you remember me, not seen you for 35yrs already. So, you have 3 daughters, me too and so does JK. Anybody else out there having 3 daughters?
ReplyDeleteGood to see you again, WEH. I always thought your name was spelt Aik Hock.
ReplyDeleteI know your nieces Susan and Sylvia Soon. They mentioned you to me and I had hoped to have a cup of coffee with you when you were still in Kuching but never got around to it.
You are perfectly right. At age 50, we all must move on. I am sure there are things all of us did when we were 17 that we would rather forget.
Do let us know if you come by Kuching. The gang would be happy to have a beer or three with you, I'm sure.
I am happy that my article in the Borneo Post 're-connected' you with us. Do drop us a line now and then.
My goodness, Mr Wee! You look well.
ReplyDeleteHi...Aik (EK) Hock
ReplyDeleteNice to hear from you and hope to see your regular contributions on this blog.
Welcome "aboard" and good to see you are looking well.
Best wishes
Wei taiko Wee Aik Hock,
ReplyDeleteWah...very happy to see you reconnected after all these years. Sure, you are doing OK, my friend.. Eh, I ingat your nama is Wee AIK Hock, right? And not EK Hock,,,But whatever lah, welcome aboard my friend..Forget about the school days "boy fight"...but we know deep inside, you care & protect all of your kawan, right bro?
Do keep in touch & best wishes, Sir !!
Rgds,
Hi Aik Hock ,
ReplyDeleteNice to hear from you and hope you are well and fine there . Happened to bump into your brother -Aik Seng at the golf course lasy week. Are you in touch with William chee? All the best and do drop a line on the WJ once a while .
Regards ,
Nicholas
Glad you still want to remember us just as we want to remember you. Now you will know where to look us up for the latest happenings over at our side as well as yours.
ReplyDeleteCall us up when you happened to swing back at Kuching and we can have a reason to call for a gathering.
How can the man not mellow with all that feminine influence around him. It's probably a good thing he had 3 daughters - can't imagine what might have been if he had 3 sons!
ReplyDeleteWAH/WEH, you were without doubt the most notorious character of Form 5 1976 but, as they say, let bygones be bygones. It's great to see you on the blog and looking so well.
So nice to see you on the blog, Aik Hock. Glad to see you looking so well, friend.
ReplyDeleteEk Hock, it's really good to re-connect with you again after so many years.
ReplyDeleteContrary to what many might think about you, you were in fact a nice guy, just misunderstood by many - perceptions, if I may say so.
While our school motto is "Ora Et Labora" , your motto was "Not Aggressive unless Provoked". That applies to me too. Universal motto, I may say.
Our strict discipline at St. Joe meant that those who didn't toe the line were viewed as "trouble-makers" and literally shunned by the majority who just want to be in the "good books" of the teachers and principal alike.
But many forgot that we were just teenagers, trying to express ourselves in different ways - and the pressure to confirm was always there. And keeping those raging hormones in check too.
But that's the past...it's good to know that you are doing fine and with three angels and a "senior" angel to light up your life.
With Christmas round the corner, our Reunion has achieved success remarkable success - and reconnecting with you is one of them, not just the food or lucky draw.
Keep it up !! God has His answers to everything. He has his own ways of re-uniting old friends.
Let's hope for more "reconnections" - keep the flame burning !!
Cheers and hope to hear more from you, Ek Hock.

HEY YOU, WEE AIK HOCK !!! MEET YOU AT THE MUSEUM GROUNDS AT 6PM IF YOU DARE ....
ReplyDelete... FOR SOME ANG TAU PENG, LAH !!! HEHEHE !!!
ReplyDeleteI thought we were all fairly well behaved in all my years at St Joe (I was there from Primary 1). However the odd "encounters" at the museum ground were "character building" stuff. Good to see you doing so well, Ed Hock. NZ is a simply stunning place.
ReplyDeleteDamn!! I meant "Ek Hock"!! Sorry Ed..
ReplyDeleteGuys, wherever you are, do send in some pictures of yourselves against a nice background of that place. It may be where you are staying or where you have just travelled to. This will attract more people to visit that place. We want fresh ideas on where to go for 2010's class trip or trips.
ReplyDeleteI've got to say that the background of WEH's photo looks remarkably similar to the view of the Swan River from King's Park in Perth. But, then again, as everyone knows, Perth is a beautiful city!! Hehehe...
ReplyDeleteThink 'Aik Hock' is correct and not 'Ek Hock'. Well, let him clarify when he comes into the blog.
ReplyDeleteI think WEH mentioned in his email to me that the photo was taken at Wellington Botanical Garden.
ReplyDelete"Not Aggressive unless Provoked"??? I think WEH did most of the provoking in those days. As many students and even some teachers can testify. hehe
ReplyDeleteWell, at least he has found time to 'smell the roses' at Wellington Botanical Garden.
ReplyDeleteLooking good WEH. Cheers.
WEH, say something liao, bro !!!!
ReplyDeleteWho said what, espcially about me. Jaga you and I will be coming to look for you. I will make you empty your pockets, make you bark like a dog and lick my boots.......hahahahahha. Even you Anons, I have the means and ways of identifying youuuuuu!!!.
ReplyDelete"sorry, sorry, Aik Hock Imposter, I'm one of the Anons and I didn't mean to say that or what about you, promise I won't do that again, you can empty my pockets,[only a few coins]but don't make me bark like a doggie. I know you don't wear boots so licking is out.
ReplyDeleteHehehe ... which rottan shall I use today?
ReplyDeleteHehe, Ta Ker, just borrow from Bro.Columba, he has many.
ReplyDeleteJames Yong, Wee Ek Hock and friends,
ReplyDeleteDo you still remember me? We were classmates in 1971 at SJS primary school. James, you were supposed to be in the same plane with Valentine Khoo and myself to Johore. But you made the correct decision to stay back. I wished I did too.
Anyways, I am contented with life and have stayed in Sibu for the past 30 years and now with Tg. Manis Integrated Port Sdn Bhd.
I have 2 grown up girls age 21 and 19. Both are in Swinburne University.
By the way, are you in contact with the boys of 1971? I wonder how many made it to 1976 at SJS?
I remembered a few names, they are Andrew Kang, Lau Swan Chai, Kok Phian, Liew Kwek Man, Tan Chin Chai, Suffian, Abd Rahman, Gerald Law, George, Betram Chew, John Lee, Ng Kok Beng.
Gosh! time flies!! I have not seen all of you for close to 40 years!!! If there is a reunion of 1976 do count me in and I am sure many of the 1971 SJS primary 6 were in the class of 1976.

Gerard, there is a REUNION. It's the mother of all reunions and it's not too late to join. All the details are on blog. I certainly remember you by name but the face is a bit hazy ... old age, mah. LOL.
ReplyDeleteHello Gerard,
ReplyDeleteOf course I remember you! In fact, we have mentioned your name in discussions several times this year. I've always wondered where you are based, and how to get in touch.
I finally caught up with Valentine Khoo in KL in mid 2009 (there's a posting on this somewhere on the blog). He has spent much of his career in banking and finance.
I echo George's invitation to you to join us for our "The Big 50" Grand Reunion at Merdeka Palace on 23 Dec 2009. Exactly one week away. You came on this blog at just the right time. Now please book your ticket tomorrow. I know so many people would love to meet up with you again.
Ya Gerard, try your best to come to the dinner, maybe can apply 2days unpaid leave and come. So many of us would like to meet you again, lots to talk about, etc, etc, you will be surprised!
ReplyDeleteLMS, if only I had stumbled on this blog a month earlier I would probably have join you guys for the "mother of all reunions".
ReplyDeleteGeorge, James and the committee have done fantastic job. I am sure you guys will have a hell of time at the Merdeka Palace. Wow!
Cheers!
So very sad that you can't come to the dinner Gerard, we all will surely miss you and so as the others who can't make it too. So when do you think we can all meet you? Maybe we all can make a trip over to Sibu for a mini reunion one day?
ReplyDeleteNo problem mate! We can always have a cuppa and chia tua pow.
ReplyDeleteHealth and friendship is more important than money when you are half century. LOL
Cheers
Ok that was me.
ReplyDeleteWe missed you at the reunion, WEH! When you next coming back to Kuching?
