Another Sports Memory

Here's another old photo that ELAS brushed the dust off and took from his album. Thanks bro!

Another nostalgic moment from the glorious sporting days of St Joe. I don't remember all of these people in the shot, but certainly half a dozen or more are within our close circle of buddies.  You can also see Bro Columba, Bro Mark, Bro Hycinth (?) and Anthony Goh.

Can anyone pinpoint the year this was taken? Or even the occasion? I zoomed in as much as I could on the trophies, but the wordings are not legible. See for yourself.

One thing's for sure though. The backdrop is our unforgettable school toilet ... no doubt a multi-sensory memory for many.

Dennis Kong (now Dr.),xxx, xxx, Patrick Ho (deceased), Tan Joo Yong, xxx , Kho Tong Chua (now Dr. ), xxx, Francis Thian.

    2nd Row ( sitting/squatting, left to right )
Frederick Guan, Michael Sim Yaw Seng, Abg Abdul Raham, Jensen Ng Koon Teck, Mohd. Ibrahim Mokhsen, Poon Mian Pheng, Paul Moh, Robert Dilai, Augustine Lim, Lee Kian Seng.

    Standing, (Left to right)
Bro. Columba, Wong Shaw Leong, Nicholas Lau, Goh Chong Seng, Jonathan Nanang, xxx , Thomas Jacques, Philip Yii, Bro. Hyacinth, Sebastian Ting, Bro. Mark, John Dawi, xxx , Chong Chin Meng, Raymond Goh, Fung Yee Kok (?), Kevin Chin, John Ng, Anthony Goh ( Chief Coach/Trainer )

I need help with those names marked "xxx" Perhaps, Nicholas, Kevin Chin or Jensen Ng can help. Surprised that John Lee is not in the photo...were you in the toilet at that crucial minute ? hehehehehe !!!

The trophies ??? Champions in Boys' Division A, B & C and "Overall Champions" ( the Plaque/Shield )- the "mini plaques" all inscribed with "St. Joseph's School" as we were Champions year in year out. That's one reason why St. Joe was so famous in those days....we ruled the track & field....the Jubilee Ground was fondly dubbed as "St. Joseph's Stadium"

You have to be there to FEEL it. I WAS THERE !!!

    Cheers !!!

  6. Wa lau ler, Edmund, your memory sure good man, can still remember who is who eh? I know some of them, including the Brothers and Anthony Goh, the rest I can't remember their names. In those days when St.Joe runs in any track event ho, other school 'fighting'for the win would start to shake even before the race begins!

  7. Sorry, can't remember most of the people in the photo. Seems to have been taken in 1974 when we were in Form 3 - people like Wong Shaw Leong, Thomas Jacques and John Ng were probably Fifth Formers then.

Can vividly remember Wong Shaw Leong doing the 100m sprint - a sight to behold with his bulk and spikes. John Ng is of course our Father Nick's older brother.

  8. Dato'AM,

I also see John Dawi..one of the top sportsmen in SJS. The noodle guy is the late Mr. Lee Kian Seng this is what I was told recently. Can't recall who told me.

    Bonne weekend.

  9. Ha? Our noodle guy Mr. Lee Kian Seng already passed on? when was that? Gee, he's a strong and healthy guy, isn't he? Just remining us that we can 'go' anytime, whether one is fit or not.

  10. 2 guy we know from that picture had gone. Lee Kian Seng, i believe was in 2007.
What about Patrick Ho? He's so young. he the brother-in-law for Wee soon Hua.

  11. Understand Patrick Ho suffered a heart attack while riding his moto one morning.
As a result he collapsed on the road.
The incident was published in the local papers.
The year was 2005 or earlier I think.

  14. What a pity and sad that they are gone that fast, maybe we can 'list out' those who are gone before us at the dinner, so that we all know who they are and maybe observe a moment of silence for them? Just a suggestion though.

  15. Ah See has named most of the people there.
    Wondered where was i?

Happy to see Dilai Ajis and Khoon Teck, where is Kia Kim? If Kia Kim and I are not there, this cant be the official photo.

in 1974, Dilai, Kia Kim,( from the 76 year F5 ) Ibrahim Mokhsen and myself ( 75 year F5 ) beat off the formidable Chung Hua Middle school No 3 in the 4 X 100 metres relay in a most thrilling race. Bro Hyacinth is tops in teaching baton changing.

And Khoon Teck, Kia Kim, ( 76 f5 year ) combined with Frederick Guan and myself broke the 4 X 400 metres relay record and i believe the record stood a long time.

Those were the days... my friends...Sons of St Joseph's get together again.

    Vernon.

  16. Ah See, for you to name Jonathan and Sebastian ting, i take my hat off to you. You are indeed a sports follower.

Jonathan was the footballer with the golden boots, he could convert any rugby try form anywhere in the field.

Sebastian is a lawyer in Miri, now politician and political secretary to the federal Minister, Datuk Chin. Sebastian was a good rugby player. I dont think many of the F5y76 would know him.

  17. See ... it's dangerous to go to the toilet during sports photo shoots ... You only know the consequences three decades later. Hahaha !

  18. Vernon,I think you are right. This surely can't be the official photo of the School Athletics' Team....Missing...Kia Kim, Stephen Yaman and your goodself. Kevin's correct - the year was 1974.

Surprising that Nicholas Lau's not running the relays ???? He could negotiate the 200m bend with ease.

Your triple & long jump records also stood for a good number of years...heard that you stepped on a nail just before take-off..hence the remarkable distance jumped !!! hehehehe !!

    Cheers !!!

  19. Something's not quite right here I think.
This is supposed to be 1974 as mentioned by some. And i was in Form 1 then (F5 1978). I know Francis Thian and he is 1 year my junior meaning he would be pri 6 in 1974 (F 1979). How could he then be representing SJS secondary in 1974?

xxx next to Francis should be Richard Kueh who was also form 1 in 1974. i think most of the xxx should from the same year i.e. F5 1978 or 1977.

  20. None of the guys from the photo commented yet, only those NOT in photo are saying it was year 1974 la, 1975 la, 1976 la, etc. Let's just wait for those in the photograph to tell us WHEN the photo was taken.

  21. KC (in the pic) has commented. He indicated it to be 1974.

  22. Dilai, myself, James Nabau, Tan Kia KIm were the 4 X 100m champion during our primary school days in 1971. Justine Jinggut was the back up runner.

I remembered Betram's brother, Vernon, was good in triple jump and the long jump.

However, I left SJS in 1971. Sigh!

  23. It was 1974 - there I (Form One) was sitting at the front row 4th from right). Francis Thian the awesome sprinter(Transition class) sitting on the same row(1st on the right). At that time all the seniors were our heroes, :p. Bro Mark wrote in my autograph and thanked me for scoring 2 points (4th position) in high jump (Div C) when I was the reserve jumper. Then in third term I moved to Sibu with my family.

  24. Since someone, KC, is in the pix and since KC said pix was taken in 1974, then the official year pix was taken IS 1974. Case closed. Now, WHO took the pix? someone from the photography club? One of the teachers? Mrs. Groovy Tan perhaps?
