Following last Thursday's dinner in KL, the following piece came out in the New Straits Times this morning ...
Not bad. Our upcoming event is on national news.
Can you name the attendees in the photo? I think the mastermind has conveniently moved aside ;-)

You all know how precious space is on a printed newspaper, right? Well, the original copy was edited for final print. But you can read the full version below, as well as see a much clearer & colour version of the photo (courtesy of Ms Sheila and NSTP) ...

KUALA LUMPUR: Members of the Class of 1976 of St Joseph Kuching are invited to a reunion dinner where they can catch up with each other 33 years later.
The dinner is planned for Dec 23, at 7.30pm at Merdeka Palace in Kuching.
These 50-year-olds will be able to take a trip down memory lane and recount on their student days when what was similar to the 1Malaysia concept was instilled in them by their teachers.
Although they had a strict missionary as their school principal, they shared many good practices including racial tolerance.
"We all feared Big Brother Columba, our school principal who demanded a high level of discipline. He also made us recite a general morning prayer at our school assembly before we head to our classes.
"This is in accordance to our school motto, ‘Ora Et Labora’, a Latin phrase that means pray and work," said Class of 1976 member Datuk Justin Jinggutt.
"We were also better than students from the top boarding schools and we strived to be the champions in both academic and sports," said Robert Chin.
"After school session, we go home for lunch and have our shower. Then we return again to school for our extra curriculum and we stay onn until 10pm in the school library to do our homework," said Robert Chin.
"Once on April fools day, we prank a schoolmate by hanging his bicycle on a tree. He realised his bicycle was missing late at night when he was about to return home from the library," said Philip Chin
"In another incident, we almost cause Edmund Lee our classmate to be killed because of our mischief. We had a competition on who could eat the most noodles and drink the most soft drink all at once.
"Edmund emerged as the winner but students had to rush him to the first aid room later because he was suffocated," said Benjamin Wong.
When it comes to fashion statement, sideburns made popular by King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley was very famous in St Joseph, but principal Brother Columba disapproved the hairstyle.
"He would cut off one side of our sideburn if he happen to spot any. Yet, some of us will hide our sideburns behind our ears. But on a bad day Brother Columba will even manage to spot that," said Bartholomew Sinos.
Former student Mike Kumpow was said to be the trend setter in the school.
"He was the first to own a pair of Amco Jeans, Adidas shoes and had a sport bike with drop handlebars. The rest of us were creative so we tried to modify our bicycles by shifting the handle backwards but we could only afford the North Star brand shoes,
"We came to know that Mike Kumpow’s dad was shocked to see his new sport bicycle because of the thinner tyres and unique handles," said Lawrence Chin.
The former students hope to reunite with their schoolmates in the Class of 1976 at the reunion dinner at Merdeka Palace in Kuching on Dec 23, at 7.30pm.
During the reunion dinner, the night will be filled with rendition of famous songs from the 70s and 80s including the school song, a memorabilia corner with popular items from the past such as school photographs, lucky draws and other surprises.
Interested participant is required to pay RM100 and should contact Robert Chin at 016-8774018 (robertjfc@gmail.com) or Ben Wong at 012-8989868 (myben868@yahoo.com) or visit http://www.stjoe-form5in1976.blogspot.com/

When Edmund Lee first came on to this blog, the first thing that came to my mind was the "eating noodle" competition. It was at the St Joe's canteen, I remembered a large crowd gathering but I could not remember any of his challengers. Hopefully, Edmund, I hoped that you don't mind that I remember you this way. Then again, I could be wrong about the participants and place of event.
ReplyDeleteShiela, tqvm for your hard work in getting this article out. Forever remembered and you bet your boss is very appreciative. hehehe
ReplyDelete1.Put your hands up if you are already 50 years old!!!.
ReplyDelete2. Put your hands up if you are married and those who have married before, show your fingers how many times!!!!
3. Ngat Sayot!!!!!
This should be reported to the Borneo Post and all those other daily newspapers in Kuching and the rest of Sarawak including Chinese & Malay and not to forget the Singapore daily.
ReplyDeleteAlex, thanks for your comments on the "noodles eating" competition - fried mee, to be more exact....cost 30 cents per plate in those days.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, we will all be remembered for "something" - I feel honoured to be remembered in that way, especially by a fellow Josephian.
You mentioned "a large crowd gathering " -sure,there was a crowd...no big deal - it's that beautiful thing called "The Josephian Spirit" -fellow Josephians ever-ready to lend their support for a worthy cause..even "mee-eating" competition.
The spirit to excel..to out-do the competition... being gracious in defeat ( though we seldom lost )and yet, magnanimous in victory.
This spirit has been further exemplified by the desire of our Class of "76 Josephians to ensure that the Grand Reunion will be successful and remembered for many years to come.
The enthusiasm is just amazing....the will to see it through is evident...many ( especially our overseas brothers ) see it as a "must-attend" function, rather than giving excuses or reasons for not coming.
Even mother-in-law functions have to be "re-scheduled" to ensure attendance at our Grand Reunion (well,I guess Josephians have a knack for choosing good mother-in-laws )- good wives, rather. hehehehe.
Anthony ( Bujang ) MacPherson even made time for us by dropping by at Ipoh Town cafe to say hello and share a cup of coffee, despite his hectic intinerary...who would have thought that the CEO of NSTP have time for humble folks like us? Same goes for Justin, Batholomew, James..and the "other apostles"
Keep the comments flowing...like the famous Chinese song - "The Everflowing River"
Cheers !!!!
Edmund A.S Lee

ReplyDeletei should have asked for air asia x tickets to London as lucky draw prizes, maybe that will get more people to turn up.
ReplyDeleteWeb Jaga, can you do some form of hype and promo for Air Asia on our blog? Then I ask Tony Fernandes to check out our website; after that I can ask for london tickets la.
Maybe post the 'boys' recent travels on air asia and hopefully relate their 'positive' experience. Include the Siem Reap trip, ben and the boys trip to kl for the mini reunion etc.
I can also get free hotel stays at Palace of the Golden Horses, KL as additional lucky draw prizes if we want.
Would be great if we can get not less then 80 of our class mates to attend this reunion.
Wow, they welcome the Irish with fists raised high!
ReplyDeleteDato AM, unfortunately a very negative experience on AirAsia for me. I missed a reunion with Bro Columba in January due to a 2 1/2 delay for my flight. Maybe you can get TF to ensure that no delay for my flight to Kuching on 23rd evening ...
ReplyDeleteHi Lucky Irish,
ReplyDeleteWho are the Irish and why are you so excited with
"fists raised high"?
I think on the whole, Air Asia is a great budget airline, and despite unavoidable delays sometimes (even non-budget airlines experience that), they are professional and offer real value for money. Not to mention the hot air stewardesses. Hehehe.
ReplyDeleteAgree that Air Sia is value for money. What I actually appreciate about them most is the manner they rush you through (though subtle) during boarding. This appreciation increases when they are delays. And then there is the RM200 vouchers if you are delayed 2 hrs or more. As to hot air stewardesses, I think it should read 'some hot air stewardesses' as not all are actually hot.
ReplyDeleteKawan,
ReplyDeleteKita punya article on the Big50 Reunion, ada keluar dalam Borneo Post tak?
Kalau ada, tolong share dengan saya di Kemboja, esai boh? kam sia ah...
Look out for the article in the Borneo Post tomorrow, including the photo. Ask someone to pos laju a copy to you, Sinos. :-)

A certain Mr Piruz Macpherson was also in the Eastern Times this morning, in a story of three friends about the embark on a 823 km bike journey from Kuching to Miri ...
ReplyDeleteNewsie sir, just in case you don't know, that certain Mr.Piruz Macpherson happens to be none other than our Dato AM's older brother.
ReplyDeleteAnybody still remembers Gerard Harry? Harry Dago, the 'big' guy? Last heard that Gerard is with Shell in Miri. What about Robert Dilai?
