Return to Eng Seng

Last Friday, we brought Ben, his wife Mei Ling & son Calvin for dinner at Eng Seng Restaurant, off Still Road in the Katong area of Singapore.

We needed to come early. This place is HOT ! If you arrive after 5pm, expect to queue up for your table.

They prepare a variety of seafood dishes. However the specialty of this place is most definitely the Pepper Crab.

We enjoyed both Pepper and Chilli Crabs. With white bread to "chelok" the sauce, of course. And we also ordered Noodles, Vegetables & Yue Teow.

What could be better? Good food with good friends ...

Cigars, Coffee and Combrades @ Merdeka Palace

On Tuesday afternoon, after a discussion with Merdeka Palace Hotel's sales executive (hope you got us the best deal for Dec 23, guys :-), Ben, Robert, Mark, and Mr S were treated by Datuk JJ to Cuban cigars and drinks.

I believe this relaxing place is at the La Habana divan, which apparently specializes in a wide selection of Cuban cigars and also has one of the largest selection of Single Malt Whiskies in Malaysia. Of course, our friends were all very "kuai" and seem to be drinking coffee or tea only.

Jude joined them a little later, as the next photo shows ...

Now, am I the only one who can't recognise Mr S ? I'm sorry, he looks vaguely familiar, but .....

Here's a close up shot - trigger any memories for any of you reading this ?

Well, let me introduce you to none other than our old friend Subramaniam from Form 5 Arts 2 (1976) ! Now a high profile officer with the Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM), he's based at Bukit Aman in KL.

Ahem Mr S .... errr ... I've this little problem with speeding tickets ... JUST KIDDING lah !

Also Subramaniam will be there at our Grand Reunion on 23 Dec. Really looking forward to meeting you there, Mr S !

Food Paradise, Kuching (Part 2)

Good news for foodies ... here are more reviews from Gourmet Lawyer's gastronomic tour of Kuching. Over to you, Georgie boy ...

"We start with what is 'arguably the best kolo mee in kuching' at Green Road. Made in the old traditional style, dryish and oily. Yum!!!" xx
"The next photo shows the kolo mee shop at Green Road in case readers want to make a beeline for it. "
(WJ note: The shop is called Sin Lian Shin in case you old foggies can't make out the print on the signboard)
xx
"Next is the Kueh Chap at Carpenter Street (lauyakeng) at night. My daughter thinks it's the best. She won't eat any other."

"Next is the Fish Head Porridge also at Lauyakeng. Some say the one at the Open Air Market is better, but the parking is easier at Carpenter Street at night. "

"Also, opposite Lauyakeng is a stall that sells the juiciest fried chicken with the crispiest skin - heaps better than KFC."
xx
"Here are some of the stalls at the Open Air Market on the other side, nearer the taxi stand. Remember Ik Hng?"

(WJ comment: Yeah, I remember many evening meals at Ik Hng, with family and friends. Their Lok Bak (deer meat) with Ginger was one of my favourites!)

"The next photo is of the bestest curry in Kuching. Its proprietor is a chap called Basil and his stall is at Merry Park in Tabuan Jaya. This is vouched for by none other than our school mate Ben Wong."

Passing of Julian Wee

Just received the extremely sad news that our friend Julian Wee (Form 5 Arts 1, 1976) has passed away this afternoon (22 April 2009) at 12:48pm in his own house in KL. He has been battling lung cancer for 2 years and passed away peacefully.

Julian is a Muslim and his burial will be this afternoon at Bukit Tiara Taman Tun Muslim Cemetery at around 5:30pm.

Those concerned can call Ben Wong at 012 8989868. He is currently at Julian's house. Ben was very close to Julian after they started working. He was at his bedside when Julian passed away.

I remember Julian as a most friendly and helpful friend in school. He will certainly be missed by all who knew him. Let us all pray for him. May he rest in peace.
