Hobbies, Interests & Pasttimes

In today's posting, we'd like to hear from YOU on what you are involved with in terms of hobbies, interests, pasttimes and recreational activities.

Most of us have worked hard all our lives, and need some areas of relaxation. As the old adage goes: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy". You'd probably agree that having a hobby is a great way to relax and enjoy your free hours, and spending time developing interests can also have many emotional, intellectual, and health benefits.

For instance, some of our friends have taken up golf in a big way. I was never quite hooked on the game, but looking at the picture ... hmmm, maybe I now see where the fascination lies. LOL. Anyway some of our former classmates are just beginner golfers and are spending lots of time at the driving range, while some others are already seasoned players. (I'm thinking of a certain NL in Hanoi).

Some still swim or play tennis or badminton, while others have regular sessions at the gym, to keep trim or fight the battle of the bulge.

Others are more armchair bound, having become hooked to a variety of computer or Internet games, from Poker to Mafia Wars, not to mention other distractions on the PS2, Wii and so on.

Reading and music and writing (or blogging) are other more sedentary activities that some, including myself, prefer. Another area I tinker with is genealogy (read properly, GL!) or the exploration of family history. I find it interesting to try understand where my forefathers came from.

Over to you .... Do share what you find relaxing - physically and mentally.

  1. I like watching movies to relax. Especially fantasy or sci-fi types that transport you into a different world.

  4. Genealogy is more suited to those geriatrics who has no further interest in gynaecology. Me? I'm 50 going on 28! Love that pic, man. Going to take up golf too! Hole in one, here I come ... [pun wholly intended!]. LOL.

  6. Well...my interest in golf just sky rocketed...WJ
    Thanks.
It is such a hard game...lots of thinking and management of individual course. Unlike riding a bicycle where one automatically picks up again after lenghty absence of doing so,golf needs constant practise and game play.
Anyway....back to the driving range for that perfect swing and chipping.....and LOOKING..LOL

  8. Tried to take up golf once but failed miserably. My husband took me to a driving range...keh leng keh sea..took 100 balls to practice and each time "changkul" the grass.Needless to say gave up..

Talk to any golfer about golf he/she will go on and on about golf..

Most times whenever anybody whom i know is a golfer, i will "k pooh" and ask.."Hey what is your handicap?" and will often get a reply "Oh 15 or some number".

Once i met a guy who said he is going for a competition. As usual k pooh me ask.. "So whats your handicap?" The guy gave me a sick and a look that suggested he's disgusted.." I am a pro lah.." Ahlamak don't know where to put my face!!

As far as time permits,I try to take photos and would spend hours looking at the photos.

Reading take most of my free time.

    Travelling if bank account permits.

Yam char with friends/relatives to catch up.

People watching is also one of my fav pastime.

  15. Good idea WJ. Maids from China might be replacing
those from Indonesia. Massage parlours are now
being incessantly invaded by an mo siau chieh. Some of our businessmen are flocking to mainland China for genuine business ventures or other dubious adventures. Yup, it's high time now to pick up a little bit of Mandarin. Tui ma?
