PUZZLE TIME #1

Alright, old chaps, I know you guys have been enjoying yourself eating and sleeping and travelling and whatnot .... it's time to get your brain cells working again.

See if you can get the right answer to this little puzzle, the solution to which may or may not need a tertiary qualification in Mathematics or at least an A-Level in Applied Maths.

And remember, you are NOT allowed to call Mr Clarence ! LOL

There are 6 volumes of an encyclopaedia on a book shelf arranged from volume 1 to 6. Each volume has 100 pages. A book worm eats his way through from page 1 of the first volume to page 100 of the last volume. It takes him 1 minute to eat through each page and 3 minutes to eat through each book cover. How long in minutes is he eating through the encyclopaedia for?

Have fun ! So that others can tear their hair out (i.e. if they still have hair) trying to get the right answer, send your answer to me by email (jslyong@hotmail.com) rather than revealing it in the comments. I will announce who gets the first right answer and send your "no-prize" by DHL.

  1. When the puzzle says "page", it should more accurately be "sheet of paper". Thanks Leo for pointing it out.

  9. Calculate everything and minus 2 covers.

  11. wrong Georgie boy !

  12. HOW CAN LIKE THAT, GL ... SURE WRONG ONE. LOL

  13. each volume got 2 covers and 100 pages. so total 12 covers and 600 pages. but you have to minus front cover of volume 1 cos the worm only started eating from page 1. and he finished eating at page 100 of vol 6. he did not eat the front cover of vol 1 nor the back cover of vol 6.

so you calculate everything except for the 2 covers: ie 600 pages x 1 min + 10 covers x 3 min.

    wrong, meh?

  14. WRONG!
You got 6 volumes of law books lined up on your shelf, Georgie boy? Maybe you should play "let's pretend i'm a bookworm .."
    LOL

  15. You said 'page' should read as 'sheet of paper'. I assume you mean 100 sheets of paper in each volume. Or do you have 2 different definitions of 'page'?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yup, that's right. 100 sheets of paper in each volume.

  17. Jimmy, this is one tricky question. It must got to do with how the encyclopedia placed/arranged on the book shelf.

My guess is that book 1 and the last book ie Book 6 is NOT well eaten. Cheers

  18. Someone who thinks he got the answerMarch 17, 2010 at 7:16 PM

The encyclopedia placement is as it normally would be on any shelf i.e. Vol 1 on the left and Vol 6 on rightmost. No tricks Gerard. Right WJ?

    ReplyDelete
  19. if we get this right, do we pre-qualify for MENSA or something like that, WJ? hehehe

    ReplyDelete
  20. That is what I meant. Book 1 is NOT well eaten neither is Book 6. Book 2 to Book 5 all lesap.

  21. Hi Anon 7:18PM, no .. getting this right just means you can pass Primary 6 maths. Ha ha ha!

    ReplyDelete
  22. c'mon - what's the answer WJ?

  23. Think of the 'pages' of a book when placed on a bookshelf. For example Volume 1-6.

The worm eats its way through from 'page 1' of Volume 1 to 'page 100' of the 6th volume.

    Hint:
    1. Where is page 1, Volume 1 of a book?.
    2. Where is page 100 of the 6th volume?

I am sure you will get the answer now. Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  24. AND IF YOU STILL CAN'T FIGURE OUT THE ANSWER, YOU HAVE TO GO BACK TO PRIMARY 5 !!! HEE HEE HEE !!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. you mean even our legal mind georgie boy need to go back to primary 5? boy oh boy.
