We are all born and bred in Malaysia, although some are now living abroad. But still we remain connected with our homeland in one way or another. So how much do you know about this country? I found some interesting articles and books on lesser known facts about Malaysia, and compiled this list of ten questions. Try it out without Googling and see how well you score.
(1) What is the origin of the word "Ringgit" ?
(2) Name three Hollywood movies that were filmed in Malaysia. Extra half point if you can name the leading actor/actress and where in Malaysia it was shot.
(3) The following are airport codes in Malaysia: KUA, MKZ, LGK, TOD, AOR ... can you name the locations?
(4) Differentiate between "pantun" and "bantut".
(5) Kuala Lumpur has been the capital of Malaysia since independence. Its name has a meaning in Malay. "Kuala" means confluence of rivers (it also means estuary). What does "Lumpur" denote?
(6) Have you heard of the R.A.H.M.A.N. prophecy with regard to Malaysia's Prime Ministers ? Explain.
(7) Which of the following islands is NOT part of Malaysia: Pangkor, Redang, Langkawi, Phuket ?
(8) Name the national flower, national animal and national bird of Malaysia.
(9) What is the largest natural lake in Malaysia? What is the largest man-made lake in Malaysia? And in which states are they?
(10) Where is Lidah Tanah in Sarawak, and what historical event is it known for?
Have fun ...

ReplyDeleteAnyway, not being a movie freak, I know of 1 being filmed around Kuching (Matang & Bau area).
Dare not try googling and any of the above bcos WJ is all seeing and knowing.
Oops, sorry about earlier partial posting. Pressed "Post" by mistake. Now completed i think.
ReplyDeleteI know [6] and it has come to pass with the appointment of the current PM. Incredible prophecy.

ReplyDeleteI think I can only name two movies filmed in Malaysia..
ReplyDelete1. Entrapment - Sean Connery & Katherine Zeta Jones - in Kuala Lumpur - featuring the Petronas Twin Towers.
2. Farewell to The King - Nick Nolte - ii Kuching - around the Sarawak Museum , Matang Area at the former Scouts Jamboree site.

"Sleeping Dictionary" starring hyper hot Jessica Alba !
ReplyDeletefor (3), KUA=Kuantan, MKZ=Melaka??? , LGK=Langkawi, AOR=Alor Star ... dun know TOD
ReplyDeleteRinggit from the words 'ring it'? The sound that coins make?
ReplyDelete'The King and I', starring Nick Nolte?
'Sleeping Dictionary' is such a hot hot movie and it is banned in Sarawak but I still have a copy in my VCD collection, watching it over and over again. That Jessica Alba is sure hot like cilli padi!
TOD, maybe stands for 'totally out drunk'?
ReplyDeleteRonald is right, 'Farewell to the king' and not 'The king and I'
ReplyDeleteSleeping dictionary which was shot in Kapit and surrounding area is a good watch. Jessica Alba was real hot! However, the movie was banned in Malaysia because there were some distorted facts not according to the local culture (Iban). But I leave it to you guys to judge. Dato Justin Jinggut should be able to give the best comment on why the movie was banned.
ReplyDeleteFYI, Jessica Alba spoke Iban in the movie. Her main task was to teach the British Administrator assigned to Kapit on the local culture. She had to sleep in the same house with the Administrative Officer and taught him the Iban dialect, hence the movie "Sleeping dictionary".
Cheers.
P.S Jimmy, was Paper Tiger shot in Malaysia?
'Bantut' in the local Sarawak Malay literally mean transvestite. I am sure Roney Zaidel should be able to confirm this.
ReplyDelete'pantun' is poetry, whilst 'bantut' is short or slow growth. But I am sure there are some other hidden meaning that I do not know of. Cheers
I guess Tungku Abdul Rahman himself prophesied the initials of the 6 Prime Minister. Although Tungku's begin with the letter A for Abdul Rahman, but he was fondly called Rahman among his peers. Correct me please.
ReplyDeleteWah, Tuan WJ...you memang hebat lah. Macam ni lah...bikin kepala kita pusing.. MKZ..I think is Mukah.
ReplyDeleteBe back in KCH this weekend. Hope to catch up with the boys..I'll contact some of you later for laksa, kolok mee, mee jawa, belacan beehoon, ang tow peng... etc...etc..yyummyy....yum..yum...
Yes Gerard, the movie "Paper Tiger" was shot in Genting Highlands, Pahang.
ReplyDeleteSo now that the R.A.H.M.A.N. prophecy is fulfilled, what do you think will be the acronym that carries on after Najib? Might it be A.B.D.U.L. ?
ReplyDeleteTOD is Tioman la! You all never been meh?
ReplyDeleteMaybe we repeat RAHMAN one more time. LOL
ReplyDeleteMichelle Yeoh shot a movie "The Touch" in Penang in early 2000s. Unfortunately it didn't quite touch the audiences and flopped at the box office.
ReplyDeleteWho knows, maybe the next acronym might be J.A.M.E.S.? lol. WJ will treat us all if it comes through.
ReplyDeleteLargest man-made lake could be Bakun, in S'wak?
ReplyDeleteQuestion 8 - National Flower - Bunga Raya ( Hibiscus) National Animal - Harimau (Tiger) - National Bird - Rhinocerous Hornbill
ReplyDeleteWas asked this question during the Inter-School Quiz Competition in 1973-have stuck with me since then.
I believe Bakun is as big as Singapore. No wonder ppls are leaving Sibu. Scary!!!
ReplyDeleteBunga Raya! Hibiscus! Ha, one of my longest memories from Nature Study in primary school was drawing many, many pictures of the parts of the hibiscus - i still remember the parts like stamen, stigma, pistil, etc altho' i'm not sure i can point to you exactly which part of the flower these are. ha ha.
ReplyDeleteRinggit - the jagged edges of an old Spanish coin used in the region
ReplyDeleteis it 'Farewell to the king', 'The king and I' OR 'Anna and the King'?
ReplyDeleteConfused Joe is right about "Anna & the King" (1999) starring Chow Yun Fatt & Jodie Foster. It was largely filmed in Penang, Langkawi and Perak ... probably because Thailand won't allow them to shoot in their country, where they still regard the storyline somewhat derogatory.
ReplyDelete"Farewell to the King" (1989) with Nick Nolte was filmed in Sarawak.
"The King & I" was never filmed in Malaysia.
if A.B.D.U.L. is the new acronym, could A be Anwar ? hahaha !
ReplyDeleteAfter Mikado in 1977, SJS under Ms Diana Ho, staged the musical drama 'The king & I' in 1978. Guess lots of the 76ers did not know about it as there was no mention even the a previous 'Mikado' post.
ReplyDeleteanon 8.44pm, how about B for Badawi (a comeback by the immediate past pm). anyway, i believe i can guess who you are anon 8.44pm. hahaha!
ReplyDeletewhat about Chinese movies? I know a few that were shot in Malaysia.
ReplyDeleteLidah Tanah is situated some 12 miles up the Sarawak River from Kuching. It was once regarded as the capital of Sarawak, during the pre-Brooke time. Many Sarawak Malays and nobles lived around Lidah Tanah at that time. At that time, what was considered "Sarawak" was roughly the area of present day First Division.
ReplyDeleteIn 1839 when James Brooke first came to Sarawak, a rebellion against Brunei was still underway, and many of the rebels had located themselves in some stockades around Lidah Tanah. The rebel leader was Dato Patinggi Ali, and the rebels were really against the oppressive rule of Pengiran Mahkota, Brunei's appointed governor of Sarawak. The situation was at an impasse, with neither side making much headway.
Pengiran Muda Hashim had been sent by Brunei's Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II to try reolve the situation.Muda Hashim wasn't able to do much either, due to resistance from Mahkota. So when Muda Hashim met the young Englishman James Brooke, with his many cannons onboard his ship, the Royalist, he asked for his help to quell the rebellion, in return for which he would make him the Governor of Sarawak.
James Brooke was able to put down the rebellion with little bloodshed. Muda Hashim backed down on his offer for a while until Brooke threatened to attack Muda Hashim's residence. On 24 September 1841, Muda Hashim had to appoint James Brooke as the Governor of Sarawak. Mahkota left and went to Mukah.
Knowing that his appointment meant little without the Sultan's ratification, Brooke sailed for Brunei and signed a treaty with Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II on 31 July 1842.
I know that "Lust, Caution" was partly filmed in Malaysia. I think in Penang and Perak.
ReplyDeleteYa, i remember "The King and I" done by St Joe.
ReplyDeletelooks like the only question not quite answered is the LAKE question la! anybody know?
ReplyDeleteI think the new acronym is A.H.M.A.D. and my guess for the first three would be Anwar, Hisha and Marina ... the next 2 haven't come onto the scene yet or are not so prominent yet. Hehehe
ReplyDelete"Lust, Caution" was HOT HOT HOT !!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHope that Political Prophet is no Prophet. His guess for 1 of the 3 can mean that Doomsday on horizon.
ReplyDeleteI suppose that the last one in A.H.M.A.D. still wearing nappies right now.
BTW, how did you come up with A.H.M.A.D.?
Maybe the new prophecy takes the initials of the next PM after Rahman ... so R.A.Z.A.K. anyone want to venture some guesses who?
