RANDOM PHOTO ALBUM - PART #8

Here's the next batch of random photos from Kuching ...

The first shot is of Sky Bookstore in the Padungan area. I haven't been inside the shop for many years, but when I was a schoolboy, the four places in Kuching I went for books were Kwong Hua Bookstore, Rex Bookstore, KK Abdul Majid and Sky Bookstore.

Next we have a view of St Mary's School. I'm sure some members of the Form 5 Class of 1976 had special relationships with the alumni of the aforementioned establishment ... old flames or even current spouses.

Remember Coffin Lane ? A.K.A. Kai Joo Lane. If I remember correctly, there was some well-known and delicious confectionery tidbits to be found in there ...

And finally here's a common scene in a Gambier Road shop ... pity we can't project the smells in addition to the visual details.

Hope you enjoyed them.

Going Upmarket - Poetry Sharing

It's probably time to show some "classiness" on this blog, and what better to do so than sharing some poetry.

Leo Sia came across and shared these poetry classics - two-line rhymes from The Washington Post competition. The organizers asked for a TWO LINE RHYME, with the MOST romantic first line, and the LEAST romantic second line.

Caution: Don't read further if you don't have a strong sense of humour. You have been warned :-)

Here are some of the entries ...

1. I see your face when I am dreaming,
That's why I always wake up screaming

2. My darling, my lover, my beautiful wife,
Marrying you has screwed up my life

3. Kind, intelligent, loving and hot,
This describes everything you are not

4. Love may be beautiful, love may be bliss,
But I only slept with you 'cause I was pissed.

5. I thought that I could love no other
-- that is until I met your brother.

6. Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so areyou.
But the roses are wilting, the violets are dead, the sugar bowl's empty & so's your head.

7. I want to feel your sweet embrace;
But don't take that paper bag off your face.

8. I love your smile, your face, and your eyes
Damn, I'm good at telling lies!

9. My love, you take my breath away.
What have you stepped on to smell this way?

10. My feelings for you no words can tell,
Except for maybe 'Go to hell.'

11. What inspired this amorous rhyme?
Two parts vodka, one part lime!

Thanks for this selection, Leo ! Who said Poetry is boring?

However, we're not advising you borrow any of these lines for your next Valentine's Day ;-)

Meeting fellow Josephians

A few weeks ago at a cafe in Singapore, James Yong met up with a sometime MSN Messenger and blogging friend, James Wong (Form 5, 1978) and his sister Ruth Wong (also a Josephian sixth former, a few years before us).

Left to right: JW, JY, RW

James Wong was in Singapore for a short trip. He and his family live in Miri, where apart from his normal healthcare business, healso enjoys photography. He's a pretty talented photographer, as can be seen if you view some of his pictures on his blog (http://jameswong.wordpress.com/) .

Ruth Wong is a senior educationalist at the National Institute of Education, Singapore. Ruth was also one of the organisers of several Josephian get-together dinners when Bro Columba happened to pass through Singapore.

Always nice to catch up with folks from home ...

The St Joe Badge

It has been some 30+ years since most of us wore the St Joe badge on our attire ... although I noticed that at the 2006 reunion in Kuching, many of the attendees had the badge on for the occasion. Maybe arranged for by the organisers?

Today, there's obviously no prefect to catch or fine us for not wearing the badge with our uniform, but in all those years that we had to, did we ever take a good look at it?

The question for this post is therefore: do you know what each of the symbols, and the motto, on the badge actually mean?
