Mini-Tornado in Miri ?

.
I was sent a couple of these photos recently. Thanks Stephen!

Interesting weather phenomena. This apparently happened on 26 April 2010. Did anyone witness this? Any damage or injuries? It looks like it was way out at sea, so unless you're an unfortunate sailor or fisherman at the wrong spot and the wrong time, I reckon it should not have caused too much havoc.

Any meteorologists or scientists out there want to explain how these things happen?

offshore workers at the derricks (visible at pic 2) must have expereinced something out of the ordinary. no reports is the local news (sin chew esp).

  12. Why are so many typhoons, tornados and hurricanes named after females?

  13. That is a waterspout which is a wind vortex formed above a body of water. The core of the vortex is at lower pressure (due to higher air speed) which promotes condensation of water at ambient temp. We see the reflection of light off these water droplets. Vortices (and circulation) abound in the weather system and in the kitchen sink and at the wing tips of an aircraft in flight. Those almost upright winglets at the wing tips of a modern jet are anti-vortex devices used to minimise the lift reduction of wing vortices. I hear snoring....
