Memories: A Singapore Trip in 1976

Here's an old photograph of a group of buddies on holiday in Singapore. The year was 1976, and most of the guys in the picture were seventeen years old.  Perhaps JL, who sent me this picture (thanks John!), can share more about the dates, location and what the guys did in the Lion City.

I'll let you identify the six groovy* guys yourself. Alas not everyone in the picture is still with us. Which makes it an even fonder memory.

(*Whenever I use the word "groovy", my daughter usually cringes. However in this case, I do think it's the appropriate word to use, as we were (and ... ahem ... still are) groovy, hip and cool ......    :-)

  9. Hi...all

    Thanks for your comments.

The trip was from KCH to S'pore and by train to Penang and back to S'pore. The picture was taken at the Bird park in S'pore. We had a grand time and most of the places we visited especially in S'pore were demolished to make way for new development.

It was sad to hear of Tan Chin Chai's untimely passing - may his soul rest in peace. He was certainly a fun guy and a good friend. Never hear a bad word about him or from him.

From the photo - all but one were from the Class of Arts 1, Form 5 of '76. The chap from the extreme left was Alfred Sim, (Nick may know him). He was a classmate of my elder brother from Kuching High Schoool (Chinese School). He decided to tag along with us on our trip.

A fun question for you guys to answer or from those in the photo who can remember: Who took the photo and how was it taken?

  10. Ahhh, that says it all, John. You guys went "bird watching" in Singapura. How appropriate ... hehehe

  12. In 1976, S$1.00 = RM1.00, right ? How times have changed.

  13. Nobody click the camera, it was set on auto and camera was placed on top of the rubbish bin? Hehe.

  14. A bird took the photo? A "featherless bird" maybe?

  15. Now S1.00 =RM2.45, I think. Times sure have changed. Hopefully our RM won't be like Rupiah or Baht or rupees in future.

Ya, maybe a very sexy, featherless bird with no wings took the photo? Can't be an old bird.

  16. Funny you should say that a "bird" took the photo, I know I mentioned that we were in a bird park (I think it was at Jurong Bird Park) but that is not the answer - will review the answer tomorrow.

I recalled, on the first few days in England (1977) and a few friends and I went to visit Trafalgar Square, London and on one occasion, we stood next to Lord Nelson's column (a few levels up the stone steps) to have our photo taken and we asked a nice young blonde woman ("Bird") to take it. When the photo was developed (no digital camera then) - the photo only showed 10 legs from waist down!!!! - typical blonde bird brain!!!!....hahahaha

  17. you must have called her "bird" or "chick" or something not so polite, and so she got her revenge on you guys! ha ha ha!

  18. or ... maybe she thought what was below your waist was more interesting than what was above, John. Not sure if that's good news or not. ROTFLMAO.

  20. Hi Norbert,

What a good guess, albeit jokingly but nevertheless you were absolutely correct on how the photo was taken - it was set on auto and placed on top of a bin!!!. Unfortunately there is no prize for that but will belanja you to breakfast one day.

  23. Hi....Anon 4:37

I WAS planning to go back to KCH towards the end of Dec and would probably have arrange to coincide with the great reunion but it all went pear-shaped. I was supposed to attend my nephew's wedding and most importantly to see my son who was living in KCH but on the eleventh hour he decided to return to England so we decided to cancel the trip. There will be another trip in the future but unfortunately does not look like in 2010 although I cannot wait to see some of you guys back in KCH/KL/S'pore.
