Gourmet Tips #2 : Best Pepper Crab in Singapore

I normally don't put two postings of the same theme so close to each other, but all this talk of food and eating over the past week has put me in the mood for another "Gourmet Tips". So I hope you're ready too ...

Today we focus on Pepper Crab, and I'm willing to wager that the one at this place will be the best such dish you've ever tasted in your half century. Alas first you have to come over to Singapore for it !

The place is called Eng Seng Seafood, and it's at 247-249 Joo Chiat Place (off Still Road), Singapore 427935.

Last month when JK and family were in town - on their way back to the UK - we brought them here. CLF and family also came, and we all stuffed ourselves silly.

L to R : Pepper Crab, Bread, Chilli Crab, Mee Goreng (partially hidden)

Most of the food here is good, but the outstanding dish is without doubt the Pepper Crab.

Focus and attention is required

The food at Eng Seng is so popular that it is recommended that patrons come before 5:30pm if they don't wish to wait in a queue for tables. On weekends, make that 4:30pm. I kid you not.

Mr and Mrs JK and CLF.....so focused in the food lah...

I do not think I had Pepper Crab before. Usually it is the Chilli Crab.

I guess that will be a dish to try when I get into Singapore.

    So, any competition from Malaysia?

  6. Sure, come one come all. Just remember your cholesterol control medication ;-)

Yeah, the roti is for you to "chelok" into the chilli crab gravy. Slurp!

Can this Pepper Crab beat Ah Seng @ Topspot ? Well Dato, you treat me to Ah Seng, and I treat you to Eng Seng, and we can both collectively decide, ok? Burp.

  7. Well, WJ and Dato, in case you cannot agree, you will need an impartial 3rd party to help you judge. It's an onerous task but ... count me in.

  8. hehehe...let do just that WJ and I am sure we will hv plenty of volunteer judges...Judge No 1 - George.

The spread on the table in the pictures above really making me hungry already and I just had lunch! Pandai la u..marketing communication Singapore already one up. I bet the original 'smell' at Ah Seng is unbeatable. hehehe

  13. The chili crab can beat Rock Road Restaurant chili crab in Kuching or not?
they also have the bread to "chelok" into the chilli crab gravy and to get you 'slurping' as well.

  15. Looks like I have no choice but to offer Leo the same deal. Seems I'll be eating crab for a few days.

  16. Dato'A,if u promise not to over feed me but also lay out a bed of nails, you'll be ok!

  18. The pepper crab from Eng Seng Seafood Restaurant is by far the best crab dish I had ever tasted in my life. Forget chili crab, it is nowhere near. The satay crab from Rock Road Restaurant, Kuching, used to be my favourite but is now relegated to 2nd place.
Thank you, thank you, thank you JY for taking us there. Suffering badly from withdrawal symptoms already. Here's a good tip: be very nice to JY (I know it is hard). Believe me, it is worth the effort just for the pepper crab!!!!!!!! and if you are lucky like me, he might even take you to the night safari (hey, don't get the wrong idea).

  19. JY, you are my new bestest buddy!!! PMSL!

  20. JK, GL and all craving for the crabs,
I think you need to know what you are actually and really having.
Think - what do crabs themselves eat? They are among the worst scavengers on earth. They eat all the dead and rotten stuff. Probably be at the dirtest of places. The more rotten, the more they like it and the tastier their flesh is to us.
This is related to me by a certain Professor who showed us pictures of crabs in their actual habitat. His family will never be persuaded to have crabs no matter how delicious they may look on the dinner table.
Sorry to have turned off all your cravings, but it is a fact.

    I'll be anonymous for now.

  21. Aiya, Anon 10:19am, you jealous you cannot go to eat the crabs, lah.

The Eng Seng crabs are specially fed on fresh prawns and fish to get that sweet succulent fresh ... LOL! Ain't that right, JY?

Anyway, if them crabs are ok for our famous heart surgeon, they are ok for me. I am seriously thinking of bringing my family to Singapore in the week before our Grand Reunion. Anyone else game?

  22. Geez, George is always so up-to-date with his cyber acronyms. Not that long ago we all learnt ROTFL, ROTFLMAO from him. Now how many of you honestly knew what PMSL meant without googling it (like I had to)?

On Anon 10:19AM's comments about crab habits, my response would be "La sap chiak, la sap tua". Look, we all made it to 50, so far so good.

On coming over to Singapore, welcome all. I'll curb my pepper crab eating till you get here.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Dato AM @ 1.16AM.. still awake yourself at 1.16am.
    Haha.
I suppose it is ok for you becos you are AM. Furthermore, we need the NST on our breakfast table.
    Cheers.

And WJ - to curb crab eating till GL's visit in December which is a long 2 months to go. Having seconds thought about "La sap chiak, la sap tua" I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Pip, did you google 'PMSL' to find out what it means? LOL. Careful, don't laugh too hard!

    ReplyDelete
  25. No lah, Leo. In Nov, Ben's coming. Then Dec, maybe George ... Makan once a month is reasonable, wot? Anyway I only said pepper crab. Not necessarily curbing other types.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Pip not responding. Guess he's busy doing the laundry after googling. PMSL, PMSL, PMSL.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Going to be more than just once a month WJ.
Besides Ben & GL, Dato AM is heading there soon, myself heading there sometime December and I am sure there are others with the same intention. Now you will need to come up with many other types. Not just Chili or Pepper.

  28. No problem Leo, can always work out something ... Looks like I can go collect commission from the Singapore Tourism Board for bringing in new visitors to the country

  29. Ayaaaaa Anon 10:19AM ... if say like that, what abt those who like chicken feet (foong chiaw). u think where chicken put their feet & where they go??? what abt the 'bishopnose' end of the chicken? isn't that a delicacy to some? imagine what pass thru that?

  31. Remember someone said, 'if it looks good, eat it!' so eat loh, not only crab but also 'ma-kee' small little crabs preserved in salt, cost 60sen each now I think.

    ReplyDelete
  32. PMSL,I've got a tight grip-on-the-drip these days! Then again, most of us have hit our half century....and things do deteriorate!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Aiyo Dato'A, 1.40am and wide awake! Never went to fill up crab at 4.30pm mah. Now starving and drooling for crabs!

    ReplyDelete
  34. all need sedikit maintenance loh, like the old Mini car. nothing a good tightening of the valve won't fix. heheheh

    ReplyDelete
  35. Pip, stop drooling and make a date in your diary [16-21 Dec]. Drive down from KL to Singapore and meet us there. Hey ... Jimmy might even take you and me on some 'Night Safari' ... we be great white hunters - wonder what game we gonna be hunting ... hahahahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Might be there b4 Dec. Dunno abt the wild animals but i reckon JY has tamer ones in mind. Perhaps he has something more exotic for the "night safari".

    ReplyDelete
  37. With GL's fair complexion, he MAY just pass for the "white hunter" ... either that or just "pak cham kai" (white chicken) hee hee hee ... ROTFLMAO ... PMSL

  38. What "game" are you talking about, Georgie boy? I thought you asked for family entertainment. I must have a chat with Gina ;-)
