Gadgets You Can't Live Without

We live in a world of gadgets. Most of them are electronic in nature. Just look around you, or on you. Most gadgets are small and are commonly strapped on your belt, inside your pocket or in your handbag (if you're a lady). Some are slightly bigger and come with their own pouch or bag.

For instance, I can bet your mobile phone is closeby. Maybe you even carry two mobile phones. Perhaps there's a digital camera (if it isn't built into your mobile phone) around. As I write this, I can see a friend taking out one of those tiny PocketPCs. And what about those indispensible PDAs ? I even know some people who travel to foreign lands frequently who'd feel lost without their electronic language translator.

I'll be the first to admit that gadgets play a pretty significant part of my life. I like gadgets - some that buzz, some that beep, some that vibrate and some that go about their duties quietly but efficiently.

What about you ? What gadget has impacted your life most (for better or worse) ? What gadget, if accidentally left at home, makes you feel uncomfortable, that something's amiss ? Any interesting stories to share ?

Over to you ...

  7. The next gadget I'm eyeing is the Amazon Kindle (e-book reader). I'm waiting for it to be more widely available and cheaper in price. I've been following the evolution of e-books for many years, and in fact purchased one ten years ago, but that one didn't quite catch on and I think got discontinued. This time with Amazon's clout in the book distribution space, the Kindle might have a chance of gaining widespread acceptance. Unless of course Microsoft or Sony redouble their efforts in this sector ...

  8. My Sony Ericsson K800i phone with decent 3MP AF camera with flash. Next is my cheapo MP3 player which I listen to audiobooks or music (eyes going, so have to give up reading books on PDA). Then my old Dopod which gets my office email - decided to keep them separate cos' I object to Singtel's gouging on mobile broadband as VAS. As well as battery life concerns...

Sometimes, I would carry a small digicam on holidays (when I remember!). My videocam is gathering dust!

I bring my notebooks but seldom open it/them on the go. Exception is when I know I have 1.5+hrs to kill while waiting for my kids in a food-court/shopping center - once or twice a week when they have tuition classes.

  14. RLNH, are u coming to the Reunion? let me remind you that the only answer permitted is YES.

  15. Richard NH Lim, continue to let your videocam gather dust and get a Flip ultra or mino. fits in the pocket easily.
Now can WJ tell us where to get it and at a good price?

  16. There'll certainly be a upcoming posting on the Flip pocket camcorders and other videos ... heheheh

  18. Definitely planning to come to the reunion. Problem is fitting it into the family schedule. Let me hint that Kuching is not the family favorite tourist destination.... ;(

I have a Toshiba Camileo (Flip clone) & Sony SR300E videocam. Both are under-utilized and gathering dust.

I lost track of Herbert Ting after he left HP SG to migrate to Canada. Tried searching for him unsuccessfully....

  19. Ok, this is a call to our friends in various parts of Canada - can you check your phone directories and other listings and see if you can locate HERBERT TING THONG KONG. Thanks.

  20. There is a Herbert Ting listed in Calgary. Perhaps I will try to call the number and ask if he is from Malaysia.
Will let you know, Jimmy Boy.

Push email has had most impact on working people's lives. And not in a good way!!! Now you can't use the excuse that you haven't logged in to check your email at the office or at home. People expect you to receive their email wherever you are, and respond within minutes. Nooooo, push email and the gadgets they push to (eg mobile phones, PDAs, Blackberry, NetBook PCs ) all making life more susah for everyone.

  26. my most valuable gadget these days is my portable massager, la. sudah tua sikit. need massage tangan, kaki, belakang .... dll

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hai Tua Sikit,

dll itu ape? Boleh jelaskan secara terperinci?
Actually the ancient portable massager shaped like you-know-what is very handy and useful.
I remember I used to massage my head and neck ONLY using the battery-operated one and indeed,
it helped to alleviate the nagging pain and numbness. If pressed harder, even better.
Tapi sekarang tak payah lagi lah. Ada banyak ( macam cendawan lepas hujan ) pusat urut yang menyediakan khidmat dan teknik picit yang khas diturunkan oleh nenek moyang dari negara Shao Lin Temple. Much more attractive and effective AND cheaper than OSIM or OGAWA massage chairs.
