Sarawak Regatta 2010

.
Dato' AM sent this over yesterday ... live action from the Sarawak River? It seems NST won a couple of trophies. Well done!

Looks like lots of excitement. Anyone else went to watch? Any more photos you can contribute ?

I was suggesting that maybe next year, the Boys of St Joe 1976 can enter a boat too. Provided the organisers will permit a special design that has added width and can take slightly more weight, in order to accomodate our current physique.

  1. The boat also has to be extra deep as Archimedes Principle will show that we will displace a great deal of water when we all get in.

  2. I heard Raja Sungei this year was the LANDAS team (i.e. Land and Survey lah)

  3. Based on an article by Sanib Said, the Director of the Sarawak Museum, the first race was held in January 1871 in Kuching (known as the Sarawak Regatta).

History also recorded a regatta in 1899 known as the Baram Regatta (carried out in the Baram river) held in Marudi and organized by Resident, Charles Hose with a goal to abolish old blood feuds through peaceful means and persuade tribes to aid Government in keeping the peace.

In order to suppress fighting and headhunting, the normal young Bornean's natural outlet, it would be well to replace them by some other equally violent, but less disastrous, activity.

He then suggested to the tribes a sort of local Henley, the chief feature of which would be an annual race between the war-canoes of all the villages.

From a race that features the might of warriors and the best of boats, the Sarawak regatta is now a great social event with practically every other district towns throughout the state taking part in it.

  4. The Sarawak Regatta has never failed to attract crowds....who literally thronged the Kuching Water-front and the week-end took on a carnival-like atmosphere as locals and tourists jostled for strategic spots to view the beautiful boats, and watch the participants in action.

Everyone, safe for the crocodiles, was in jovial mood as the events got underway.

Side events included traditional water games like duck catching, pillow fighting over water, climbing slippery poles, rowing in opposite direction and swimming with batang apong.

However the proposed crocodile-catching event was cancelled due to the risks involved.(or due to the lack of crocodiles, whatever the reason )

Ironically, it was the Team from Land & Survey that prevailed over the rest in this water carnival. They defended their position as the “King of River” after emerging champions in the Bidar 30-man paddlers finals.

The Sarawak Regatta has the potential to further boost our Tourism Industry as international water sports enthusiasts have proposed that the famous dragon boat race be included as an event in next year’s Sarawak Regatta

    Cheers !

  6. Is it true that the man who jumped from Iskanda building 17th fl., in Kuching, is one of our former classmate's brother-in-law???

If it's true then my deepest sympathy to him. One would wonder why he did that?

I might be wrong or having received the wrong info. I don't know.

  7. No wonder no fire ever broke out in Marudi when Charles Hose was Resident - his name was enough to douse any potential flames !

Like Penangnites used to boast that the island-state never encountered any black-out - because it was founded by Sir Francis LIGHT !

And also...know why there are many Hakkas staying around Damai area ? Because the mountain there is called "Santu BONG" !

Many fruits seem to have originated from China...like Rambu TAN, Pame LO, Mangos TEEN, Man GO, Ly CHEE, Pa KIA, Soo KOON, Chay LEE, (cherry),Papa Ya & Lon GAN.
