8 Ways to Keep Youthful

Over the past few months, I have been receiving from some of you guys a number of interesting pictures and health tips for staying youthful. You asked that I share them on this blog, and I admit I've been sitting on them for a while. I thought I'd collect a few more before the right moment to post them. The moment is now.

Let's begin with this photo message from Dato' AM ...

I'm not very sure ... is our friend hinting that this is the secret to making it to the peak of Mount Kinabalu at 51? LOL.

Indeed many of you guys have found ways that seem to have worked (more or less) for yourselves.

Well, I've compiled some of those tips I've received into this list of "8 Ways to Keep Youthful".  I must emphasise that these are NOT from me. Though I agree with many of them, I too find it a challenge to stick to many of these tips.

1)  Meditate

Meditation reduces stress levels, keeps the mind positive and free from anxieties. It is as some say "Age is all in the mind" and through a regular practice of meditation one might attain a positive, fresh and youthful mind.

2)  Exercise regularly and Eat well but in moderation

Moderate exercise on a regular basis promotes longevity, builds and maintains strength and flexibility and makes you feel alive.

Someone suggested: Eat a well balanced vegetarian diet. Studies show that a well balanced vegetarian diet with plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts and grains provides optimum nutrition for a fit and active body.

This is one advice I'm afraid I can't bring myself to follow. I love my steaks too much. But then again, I must say some vegetarians do look pretty good. Do you not agree?

3)  Keep only cheerful friends

It is important to keep a positive outlook on life. Stay away from those who are chronically pessimistic. The grouches just pull you down.

Another advice I like: Laugh more often; laugh long and loud. Children laugh an average of 300 times a day, while adults laugh just 30 times per day. Laughter is an expression of inner happiness and is a tonic for the soul. When you are laughing, you are not brooding or despairing.

Back in school, some of us used to read the magazine "Reader's Digest", and in those early issues, there was always a column called "Laughter is the Best Medicine". I still believe in that dictum, and this website tells you more.

So laugh loud, laugh hard, laugh more, Kuchingites!

4)  Keep Learning

Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, how to win 4D, whatever ... You can also learn lots by travelling. You're never too old to learn. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

5)  Surround yourself with what you love

Whether it is family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, etc, surround yourself with them. Your home is your refuge.  Invite your good buddies home for good conversations and good dinners (also don't forget your Website Jaga :)

Your home is also where you should feel safe to be at your creative best. Whether through music, photography, painting, dancing, writing, blogging, etc, getting in touch with your own unique inner creativity can make you feel ALIVE.
6)  Accept the tragedies of life

The tears will happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7)  Cherish your health

I'm no doctor, so will let Dr Kuo comment more on this.

All I can suggest about your health is: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve yourself, get help.

Once in a while, spoil yourself. Maybe a spa, facial, massage ... check our previous post on ways to pamper your feet :-)

8)  Give Joy to Others

You never lose what you give. In fact by sharing your own happiness, talent and resources with others you nurture your own treasure chest of grace, blessings and peace.

You can do this in any way you wish ... donations to charitable organisations, helping others, random acts of kindness, giving back to society ... it's totally up to you.

Well, those are the 8 tips for keeping youthful. Let me end this posting by inviting you to reflect on two sayings.

The first is  "It's not about the years in your life, but the life in your years".

The other is "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away".

Go on my friends and live it up !!!

  11. There's a very fine line between "art" and "pornography" - in the Alicia Silverstone's picture, that "fine line" is her left hand/arm ! WJ, until now, the famous "stone" I know are "Bridgestone" & "Silverstone" - and they are all tyre brands ! Thanks for updating us on the more famous member of the "stone" family !

On a more serious note,it's our ATTITUDE towards life that broadly determines how we will look or feel as age catches up with us.

The old adage that "time & tide waits for no man" should be a timely reminder that an hour spent on worrying is an hour of opportunity lost in seeking happiness. It can never be recovered, and the more time spent/wasted on "unproductive" thoughts or action meant lost time in alternative pursuits.

The famous poem..."DESIDERATA" basically sums up how life should be lived...however, the challenge is to follow it through...though not easy.

"Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world.
    Be cheerful.
    Strive to be happy."

  12. I have always wanted to be a vegetarian. After this posting by our web jaga I will certainly try and try again and forget maintenance la!!!

  13. Edmund -you forgot the Flintstones. Ha ha ha!

  14. Then you certainly won't even be able to scale
Mt.Santubong, AM! let alone to try to conquer
Mt. Kinabalu again. I suspect your success in topping Mt. Kinabalu is attributed to a long period of abstinence from you-know-what.
Edmund, another "fine line" is her left leg -- a common and popular pose; wonder what lies in store for us if she moves it. She could be a shemale, you know, hehehe...

  15. Abstinence did you say? hmmmm....fasting month is in two days..yes.

  16. Don't know about you all but I just eat what my mind tells me to. Why give up all the good food when you still can eat?

There will come a day when each and everyone of us will stop eating this and that, and when that time comes, one would ask 'why didn't I eat that when I still can?'

Just like what they say, 'travel and see the world while your legs can still carry your body' and not when you can't walk anymore.

  17. Oi,what about Stone Cold, Steve Austin? you all don't remember him meh?

  18. If you move her left arm away or upwards, you would probably see a 'bush' under her armpit. lol.

  19. Unofficial Sarawak Tourism GuideAugust 11, 2010 at 10:12 AM

Speaking of scaling mountains, our old buddy Lipp Kee is going back to Sarawak and he & family intend to go to Mount Mulu. Any joiners?

    ReplyDelete
  20. He would better get some tips from our Dato' AM before scaling.

Did he maintain his body or not?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I totally agree with you, NL. But then the food you've been eating seems to have stayed off your slim body. I wish our pal CLK the best of luck with his fight with gravity at Mt. Mulu though! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love food, also depends on how they are being cooked or prepared. Eat anything, but I really think moderation is key here....as with everything else. In any case, it's good to be aware... Cheers.

  23. So is NL joining CLK at Mulu or not?

    ReplyDelete
  24. No, AKP, me not joining CLK at Mulu liaw. Like I said before, nobody to go with, travel agent rule is 'two to go'.

Anyway AKP, thanks for your concern kay? Luv ya!
