Sizzling Shanghai (Part 1)

.
Just got back from Shanghai in the wee hours of Monday. Wife and I were there for five days. For me, it was a business trip - participating in an "Urban Innovation" conference organized by Cisco and hosting some government officials from ASEAN - but we also took a couple of days to explore this vibrant city as well as visit the Shanghai Expo 2010. It was also micro-reunion time as we met up with Jimmy Kho Khoon Haw (Form 5Sc, 1976), his wife Janet (also a Teresian) and youngest daughter. Jimmy has been based in Shanghai for work for a few years.

The first thing one notices about Shanghai is how many people there are! Shanghai has more than 20 million residents (and rising). But consider this: even though Shanghai only has 1 percent of China's population, it accounts for 5 percent of the country's output and 25 percent of total trade!

Here are some photos. It will probably take me a few postings to do a decent job in reflecting the exciting metropolis that is Shanghai. The next few are from an area known as Nanshi, the old Chinese City.

Thanks Jimmy & Janet !

More Shanghai explorations in the next posting.

  6. Shanghai Expo 2010 is very impressive. Definitely worth going but you have to be prepared to spend much time queuing. If you are seriou about visiting more than 10 pavilions, allocate at least 2 days for it. We spent six hours there but only managed 4 pavilions (and the most popular ones too!) Stil there's lots of photo ops just wandering around.

  7. JY, did you visit the Malaysian pavilion? I read a lot of negative comments from the local media.
    Cheers

  8. Typo in my last comment. I meant to say " ...(and NOT the most popular ones too!) .."

  9. No Gerard, I didn't go into the Malaysian pavilion. The queue was just too long, and I reckon I kinda knew what Malaysia had to offer :)

However there was a little cafe outside that sold nasi lemak and satay. We had some of that ... but must say it wasn't that tasty.

Also there was a Malaysian performance on stage outside, and I took some photos with the dancers too. I'll show that in the next posting.

  10. Now I remember who Jimmy Kho Khoon Haw is, been years since I last saw him. In fact his elder brother was with me in Sunny Hill School.

Hai, Khoon Haw, now where is your brother Kho Khoon Teck? If you are reading this, please pass me his phone number. Thanks.

How's are your sisters? They still stay at
    Nanas Road?

Great to see you again, well, in photo of course, and hope to see you in person soon.
