Giving Back to St Joe

.
Bottomline: Pledges Needed
We've been discussing ways of giving back to St Joe for a while. Based on discussions that Bob Chew and I have had with the Principal and our review of various possible needs suggested, we propose a one-time sponsorship of new desks for students and teachers for 3 classrooms. This will impact 6 classes since these classes are used by morning and afternoon students.Total cost for this is around RM 8,500. I propose we aim for the auspicious figure of RM 8,888.

We currently have RM 5,000 left from our Grand Reunion funds. We need a further RM 3,888 and hope that you will agree that this is a meaningful way we can make a small contribution to our alma mater. We therefore hope you will be generous and pledge an amount (as small or as large as you like) towards making up this figure. Just make your pledge in the comments. We'll figure out the collection process later. We hope to be able to present our contribution to the Principal by July 2010.

Here's the latest status (updated daily):
.

Details now follow ...
.
Background
A few weeks ago, Bob and I called on St Joe's principal Mr Thomas Lau to explore some meaningful ways we could contribute to the continuing education of the new generation. We had an interesting chat and Mr Lau and assistant Raymond brought us on a little tour of the school grounds. You've already seen photos of the Library. Here are some shots from our old classrooms in the Old Boys Block.

Photo 1: One of the classes we studied in back in 1975 and 1976

Photo 2: Another view of the same class

Photo 3: Mr Lau shows the condition of the desks and chairs

Photo 4: The next classroom

Photo 5: Bob trying to show us he still remembers his Add Maths formulae

In deciding what form our donation takes, we are guided by the following principles:
(a)  the donation will be for something that helps in the education of the students,
(b)  it will be a once-off donation, rather than extended over a period which may be hard to manage,
(c)  it should be something that a sizeable number of students will actually make use of

After listening to the Principal on possible areas that would benefit from sponsorship, we have decided on sponsoring new desks for three classrooms (our old ones in 1976), namely
old 5Sc - now 2H and 5H
old 5A1 - now 2G and 5I
old 5A2 - now 2F and 4E

Student desks (103 units @ RM 68 each) = RM 7,004

Teacher's table (3 units @ RM 500 each) = RM 1,500

Other expenses for future repairs (and rounding up to an auspicious number :) = RM 384
.
Total needed = RM 8,888

We currently have RM 5,000 left from the Grand Reunion. So to top that up, I'd like to ask if any of the boys of 1976 would be willing to pledge some more (up to RM3,888) to bring this figure to an auspicious RM 8,888.

Just enter your pledge (your name and amount pledged) as a comment to this posting. We'll figure out how to collect the money from you later.  I'll also put up a running count of how much we have collected, updated daily. I'm sure I can count on your generosity. Thanks in advance.

  3. Great effort, guys!
I could have been in one of the classes if...

    One student desk, please.
Nothing to shout about but from my heart.

    P.S.
I will be on short leave from 3rd to 10th July. I would hand the money over to George Lo?

    Cheers

  6. Yeah anon 11.58pm. so what can you do for your school and what ARE you doiing for your school? 10 desks?

  10. Suggest that the names of those who contributed towards the RM3888 be inscribed (or painted) on the individual desks they donated.
CLK(m) and JY will now have 3 desks with their names while GH will also have 1. Just a suggestion though.
The other desks purchased (balance RM5K from the reunion) can be inscribed with Class of Form 5 - 1976.
So hurry up with your pledges if you want to have your name on the desks. Limited numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Opps, sorry, CLK(M) and & JY, it should be 5 desks and not 3.

  14. Can pledge for half a desk or not?

Though I did not get 'out' or 'graduate' from any of the classes in 1976, I think I can 'throw in ' two desks, just for balancing.

Good luck guys, keep 'throwing in your desks' before the classes gets full or you'll feel sorry for not doing anything.

  17. From the photos, I think the school had repainted the classrooms, could it be Petronas chipping in the donations? Looks like their colour.

  18. I think it is a good idea for donating 1 desk per year of your education at SJS....that way..very fast to achieve the target loh....
we should also change the chairs to a more "consistent" colour or style, else look like a canteen setting. What do you think guys?

What a meaningful donation. Keep it up, sons of St Joseph .... a voice is resounding. Ha ha ha!

  20. If we assume the RM5000 we already have goes towards covering the 3 teacher's tables (RM1500), we still have RM3500 from there. Less off the addl costs of RM384(for repairs etc), that's RM 3116 which will buy 3116/68 = 46 desks.

We planned to get 103 desks for the 3 classes, and so far 18 have been pledged. So we need (103-46-18) or 39 more desks.

(Note the "good" exam technique reflected above, in showing my working in the arithmetic. Our SJS Maths teachers used to remind us that even if we get the answer wrong, we'd still get some marks in the exam if we showed the working :-D

  46. Hi Gerard, I have not been back to Kuching since 2007. Vientiane is a nice quiet city by the Mekong River. It reminds me of Kuching except on the other of the river is Thailand. I plan to visit a number of project sites scattered in various locations in Lao PDR to meet with project beneficiaries.

go sjs 76, go go go.

  52. James and Bob will allocate the additional desks to other classes that need them, so please keep the pledges coming in.

You don't have to be a 76er. The donation drive is for St Joe. As long as you have studied in St Joe, or any of your siblings or loved ones have any connection with the school, just step up and be counted.

  53. Ole Ole Go..sjs76..excess desks may go to a St Joseph School in Africa and each one will carry one desk on board MAS to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup final! At least we don't go to SA empty handed.

If no need to buy ticket, then I don't mind to carry a desk there. Two desks if need be, one for my 'black' girlfriend.

At least their sons get to sit on the chairs we are donating soon, those of you with no son(s) there, well, sorry.
Maybe can arrange to visit the school and sit on the new chairs we all donated?

Anon 5:21PM > I feel I need to comment on this. Of course, this is my personal opinion, and others are free to have theirs. To me, giving back to St Joe has nothing to do with having children studying there. My own child never even studied in Kuching. To me, it's about expressing my own gratitude to the school that nurtured me thru the foundation years, and which I feel moulded my character and to which I owe what little success I may have had in life. So it doesn't matter if none of my children or grandchildren ever make use of the desks or whatever is contributed. All that matters is that a new generation of youngsters do benefit from it in their education.

I hope others who contribute share somewhat similar sentiments. I believe any donation is good. As the saying goes: what goes around comes around.

As to when will it end, firstly I am greatly encouraged by the generosity of the old boys (including all who gave to the RM5000 remaining from our Reunion). Scondly we have already exceeded the original target, but rather than stop immediately, possibly depriving others who still want to contribute, I'm leaving it open till end of June. At that point, we will tally what has been pledged, and whatever balance after buying the 103 desks and 3 tables, we will recheck with Mr Lau, the Principal, what are the other priorities. During our discussion, PCs, projectors and books were mentioned as possibilities.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I agree with Jimmy. It's about giving back to SJS without preconditions. It doesn't matter if our sons will ever use the desks. These pledges are entirely voluntary.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Well done boys, keep up your good and well intended deeds. To those who do not contribute, no worries lah.....it does what it says on the tin - "VOLUNTARY" only

Just imagine what one year classes, (Olde boys of 76!!!) can do and multiply that by other SJS old boys of other years. Easily replacing the whole school's admenities.

SJS needs a new and innovative chair of governors who can, besides overseeing the good running of the school, be able to generate a steady flow of contributors - private individuals or companies to maintain a good standard of facilities to the students. I am sure there are on-going projects to keep the school funds flooding in but from the reports, comments and photos of the recent visits to the school showed that they need updating. I remembered we used to sell lottery tickets (I heard this was banned) plus other projects to generate revenues for the school.

Imagine, a private company would contribute say, 10,000 ringgit (can be in the form of money or supply of items) which will allow them to advertise the company for say 2, 3 or 5 few years, etc...and so many ideas.

To sum it all, there are so many ex SJS students who could be sponsors to the school. Nothing is impossible.

Excellent advertising for businesses who contributed a
