Lobo in Concert

.
If you regarded yourself as A Simple Man or even A Cowboy Afraid of Horses ... If you still Don't Know How to Tell Her About some another person (possibly Stoney) .... If you were perpetually on the lookout for a place called Lodi or a mutt named Boo ... then you probably grew up in the 70s and 80s with the music of American singer-songwriter Lobo (a.k.a. Roland Kent Lavoie).

And if you felt It Sure Took A Long, Long Time for him to come back in concert, well ... your wait is over ... Here's your chance to catch him in a live concert one more time on his "Lobo Asia Tour"  ...

15 Oct 2010, 8:30pm,  Arena of the Stars, Genting Highlands

Lobo was last at this same venue in 2006, where he played to an overwhelming audience.

For more details on this KL show, check out this website.

On the next day, he moves down south and is scheduled for

16 Oct 2010, 8pm, MAX Pavilion, Singapore Expo

I've already bought my tickets for this one !!!!

For details on the Singapore show, click on this other website.

Click on THIS for a complete list of Lobo songs.

And HERE is the official Lobo fan website.

So c'mon on guys.... relive your younger days .... treat yourself to the concert!

And remember to take lots of photos of yourself there in your bell-bottoms for this website :)

Finally one of my favourite songs ... to put you in the mood ...

Enjoy ...

Gourmet Tips #1 - Best "Lor Tu Kar" in KL

This is the first post of  "Gourmet Tips", an occasional series on excellent eating places in different cities where our schoolmates and friends happen to be located. I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to travel around the region for work, and sometimes after the day's proceedings I drop by to visit some of our buddies. On some of these occasions, I get introduced to great eating places and special dishes.

In this series, you're going to notice a great deal of variation in the eating places - from food stalls to cafes, pubs to restaurants. The decor and pricing may differ widely, but in all cases there will be one or two exceptional dishes which I will highlight.

This first posting comes under the category of great evening fare to be enjoyed in KUALA LUMPUR.

Apologies to Muslim friends but this one's not halal.

The outlet is at No. 32, SS2/66, which is at the Damansara area. The exceptional dish is "Lor Tu Kar" (pork stewed in rich soya sauce), usually served with white rice. The aroma is great, the meat tender, the taste divine and the service friendly & prompt. This delicacy was introduced by our friend Pip, and after trying it, yummmmmmm ... I fully recommend it.

Opening hours of the stall are from 6:30pm - 1:30am everyday (except Mondays).

Beside the excellent Lor Tu Kar, this stall also serves up a good Bak Kut Teh dish.

So if any of you happen to be out late in KL, and have a chance to check out this place, do post some comments.

Also if you know of other places that provide culinary delights, do send me an email to describe them. (Of course, to convince me it's really that good, you have to invite me to sample first ... hehehe :-)

Till the next "Gourmet Tips", eat well ...

Visit to Dato' AM @ NSTP

Last week, when I was on a brief visit to KL, Pip & I called on Dato' Anthony at the New Straits Times Press (NSTP) offices at Balai Berita, Jalan Riong in Bangsar.

I haven't met Anthony for more than three decades, but as we had exchanged emails recently and he had been featured in my previous "Then & Now" posting, I felt like we'd already met. Also his "now" photo was obviously a pretty recent one. Our friend is in good shape, and at 50 still retains his boyish looks (sans the curly hair), with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes.

We chatted over a light breakfast of roti canai & kopi. We learnt a little about Anthony's experiences as CEO of NSTP, a role he took on only in November last year. As with everywhere else he's been, he seems to be making positive ripples here too.

After makan, Anthony brought us around the floor he was on. Along the cooridors and in meeting rooms, there were many interesting artworks - pictures and sculptures - notably some by the well-known Malaysian artist, the late Ibrahim Hussein.

Anthony then started up his Notebook PC and showed us his new "Out of Borneo" blog. He has put together some great recollections of his childhood days, written in a light and amusing style. For those who haven't yet found it, I've included it under "Interesting Links".

Later, Anthony brought us to NSTP's Archive Department, which holds a very impressive collection of photos and information covering a broad spectrum of companies and personailities. Also there are years and years of old NST papers kept in bounded volumes or on micofilm. Anthony asked for the newspaper from October 1976 to be brought out, and it was from this volume that I took and featured a few page shots of the 1st Oct 1976 issue in my posting a couple of days ago.

We left with some souvenirs after an hour and half. It had been an extremely interesting morning, and also felt great to catch up with a fellow Josephian and Fifth Former from 1976.

Our very best wishes to you, Anthony, and thanks for the good ol' Sarawakian hospitality .

Kuo's Visit & Mini-Reunion in KL

Yesterday, five or six friends came together for lunch at the Ming Room, Bangsar Shopping Centre in KL when James Kuo dropped by for the day. I won't list the names as I'm sure regular readers of this blog already know them.

It's been a long time since some of them last met Kuo, who's now fixing hearts in Plymouth, UK. Still looking pretty fit, though a little thinner on top.
Kuo flew back to Kuching later that day. No doubt there'll be more reunions to report soon.

Gastronomic Tour around KL

We spent the past two and half days in KL. Purpose was to attend a friend's special dinner party.
Caught up with Pip, CLK(f), HG & (briefly) KCK & LC. The trip quickly turned out into a wonderful gastronomic tour.

Here's what I had on my "eating list" ...

(1) Beef kueh teow and char siew mee, followed by delightful desserts of ice kachang & chin chow at Petaling Street (the "Chinatown" area of KL)

(2) Hokkien mee, roasted duck, fried rice, and spicy pork soup in Damansara.x
x
(3) Tiramisu and chocolate cake at Alexis, Bangsar Shopping Centre

(4) Dim sum at Restoran Jin Xuan Hong Kong in Damansara Jaya

(5) Green chicken curry & softshell crab with salad at Delicious @ Bangsar Village

(6) Teo Chew Claypot Bak Ku Teh, Assam fish & Veg somewhere at Subang

(7) Burnt Coconut (Kelapa Bakar Utara) by the roadside

If all this sounds delicious, that was because it really was. Yummmmm ... It was also the reason why there were no postings over the past few days. Burp!

Ladies & gents, thanks for the wonderful hospitality.

The Hunt for Harry

He was a real hard one to pin down - always busy and often on the move - but with brilliant facilitation by CLK (f), we finally met Harry earlier this evening in Singapore and had a nice dinner at Tony Roma's restaurant.

More than twenty years have passed since we last met each other in Kuching. My old friend hasn't changed much, except for a few extra pounds in the middle. Still looking pretty good, he's now an executive with a large US conglomerate, and based in KL. His area of expertise is in healthcare systems.

We didn't waste any time getting down to old stories from London and Canada and Kuching. A great laughter-filled evening. Good to see you, Harry! Now don't be a stranger and join us sometime in the website chat. If you don't, we might send CLK(f) after you again ... ha ha ha!

Another Mini-Reunion in KL

On 6 April 2009, there was another mini-reunion in KL when our lawyer friend George Lo Kuin Fah(Form 5 Sc, 1976) made a short visit there. Among the former classmates who got together were Philip, Chee Kok, Cyril, Roney and another.

An obviously happy Georgie boy in KL

A more complete narrative of the exciting events of the day will be added later, but for now let me just quote a few comments directly from the participants ...

"George is still the same affable and soft spoken guy that I remember from our school days. However, he is no longer quiet!" - PC

"chee kok looks exactly the same as he did 33 years ago [maybe a couple kg heavier is all]. roney looks totally different. and it is not just the shaven head. cyril looks much the same but he's become a comedian since form 5." - GL

" We were kicked out (of Vintry, a cosy wine bar & another of CK's find) around 1.30 when the place closed" - PC

"He looked the same after 33 years - afro hairstyle and prominent proboscis. still the same gentle humble soul." - GL

"... a very pleasant evening where red wine flowed freely and the laughter was loud. Even I succumbed to a couple of sips of the red jiuce" - PC

"Had another mini reunion last nite with George, Philip,Chee Kok, Roney and Cyril. Plenty of jokes and laughter." - Another

A nice cold beer ... perfect !

GL with KCK and PC. KCK needs to smile more. And why does PC look so uneasy?

Formmates based far away from Malaysia, I'd like to draw your attention to the signboards at the back, which showcase the local culinary delights. But stop drooling, ok? ;-)

Cheers! Left to right: CM, RZ, PC, GL, KCK

The Details (added later)

Given the torment that this entry is causing some of our UK friends, not sure if you still want any further details, but here's what PC & GL told me. I did promise I'd post it, but will keep it brief to spare our overseas friends too much additional pain.

* GL arrived in KLIA in the early morning, took the KLIA Ekspres down to KL Sentral & made his way by taxi to Cititel by Mid Valley megamall when his "chauffer" overslept and didn't turn up :-) They later met at the the hotel and then went to PC's house.

* They found PC as friendly and helpful as usual, giving street directions to perfect strangers. (Between this and picking up stray felines, I guess our friend has his hands pretty full - website jaga)

* The three then had lunch at a new and apparently "super delicious" Dim Sum restaurant near PC's place.

* After lunch, they adjourned to PC's place, went for a stroll to buy lunch for PC's princess. Our lawyer friend took the early opportunity to have a beer (see, I told u he was stinkin' drunk by nightfall! - website jaga) while waiting for the 'ta-pau'.

* Next they went to a place where some people experienced 'cupping' for the first time. 'Nuff said on this for now. (There's more to be shared later ... or not ... depending on the enticement I get - website jaga)

* The beers started flowing after 7.30pm at a food court called Ming Thien in Taman Megah. They were later joined by CK and then CM. The beers and food then started to get washed down by stout. About 3 hours later, they decided to adjourn to another place, Vintry, where RZ joined them. Vintry, another of CK's finds, is a gem of a place, a cosy wine bar in a suburban nook surroundings near Damansara/Bangsar. They were kicked out around 1.30 when the place closed.

In short, another great night ! Lots of laughter, lots of food, lots of booze, no new allegations or law suits (as far as I can tell) ....

Old Pals Meet Up in Kuala Lumpur

Here's a snapshot of two old friends, from Form 5 Science, meeting up in KL recently.

Ho Boon Chiang and Philip Chin are both based in Kuala Lumpur, as are a few other Fifth Formers from 1976. BTW, if you want to contact these chaps, you can find their email id's in the other posting called "Who were in Form 5 Science?".

Both seem to be sporting similar hairstyles these days ... Guys, I don't think we want to know who your barber is, but can you tell us where the best eating and drinking places are in KL?
